Hello CPU gurus,

Can you help suggest a good CPU buy to repurpose an existing system?

I have a few-year old system I put together for work and experiments with OSX, using an Asus P9X79WS mobo and a Xeon E5 2620 (nice system for what it is, with ECC memory and all... but a slow clock).

I ended up moving all that work to a real MacPro, and am re-purposing this system for flight sim (using X-Plane).

I'd like to find a good used or inexpensive new LGA 2011 chip to run in this, perhaps a faster i7 chip as I no longer need ECC memory.

Any thoughts offhand?
This is paired with dual GTX670's with SLI enabled, but I think a lot of flight sim stuff is still a bit CPU-bound.

Thanks for any advice!
David

@Tacticall993, thanks for the super-quick suggestion.

Those CPUs look great, but then I checked support on the Mobo vendor's website and saw they weren't listed. So they might work, but I could be sure.

Based on some further research and older sim answers:

And some comparative discussion of this age of processor:

I finally settled on a Core i7-4820K from eBay used. I think I would have tried the Xeon 2687W (very affordable used) if I were going to to use...

My brother has this in his build, and couldn't ask for more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117403&cm_re=i7_5930k-_-19-117-403-_-Product
If you're looking for a cheaper one, I'd go with this:

Anyway, hope this thread is useful to someone in the same space. I'll report back when able.

Thanks,
David
