Greetings...
Before I open up both my HP Stream (200-010) mini-desktop and my Dell Inspiron 14-inch (3452) labtop and swap the DDRAM, I wanted to ENSURE that they are the exact same memory (RAM), and both will be compatible.
I say/ask this because Both of these have an intel celeron, 2gb of ram, and 32gm emmc -from the factory, with the HP stream having a 1.40ghz celeron and the Dell having a 1.60ghz.
I bough the HP first, just as an everyday email/word/excel/itunes/etc basic workstation, and the dell for the same logic, but on the go.
Shortly after I bought the HP, I bought a 4GB stick of RAM (since it only has 2 slots) for a total of 6GB on the stream.
The Dell, has only 1 slot with the stock 2gb of ram.
Being Labor Day, I saw Kingston (memory) had a "sale/free shipping/blah blah blah" and I wanted to get an 8GB stick of ram, for both the HP and Dell.
HOWEVER, I'm told that the dell will only support a max of 4GB of ram, and that me buying an 8GB will render useless as the processor will only clock up to 4 gigs and not utilizing the additional 4gb's. This information I saw on Dell and I even went to chat with Dell to see if there was any validity to that as I'm skeptical, hence my question to the community if such rumors have any validation!
The other thing that peaked my curiousity was that then I was shopping for the 8GB stick for the HP, it was offered for the Dell - which made me ponder: "Why would kingston offer an 8GB option for the 3452, if it "won't work" - per dell"?
Lastly, I saw some dude on youtube on a "how to replace the ram on the dell 3452" and he put an 8gb kingston stick, fired it up, and in the properties window, it reflected "8GB".
So... 2 out of 3 makes to believe that an 8Gb will work on the dell? And... the HP??
the other thing i noticed was that on both computers, they have the exact same part number from Kingston:
8GB Module - DDR3L 1600MHz
Part Number: KCP3L16SD8/8
Specs: DDR3L , 1600MHz , Non-ECC , CL11 , X8 , 1.35V , Unbuffered , SODIMM , 204-pin
Same for a 4GB stick - same part number.
So back to my original question, If these seem to be compatible/exact, I plan to put the 4gb stick that i've already purchased - onto my dell - and the 2gb stick from the dell, onto the HP (2 - 2GB sticks) for a total of 4 gbs of ram on each computer.
That is until I upgrade to the 8gbs.. (16 GB total on the HP, and apparently 8 on the dell)?
Can anyone provide some insight on this?
I know it's an extremely long thread, and sorry for all the CAPS, but i'm apparently not good at explaining things and getting right to the point.
Any advice/suggestions/etc are greatly apprecieated.

Militarydave
