Hello Dear Community,

The new AMD APUs have been revealed. I am interested on them since I would like to build a PC for high quality HD gaming that runs under 100 Watts of power. The A12-9800 has a 65 W TDP, 4 Cores, 3.8/4.2 GHz and Radeon R7 graphics (8 CUs, 512 Stream Processors, 1108 MHz, 1.13 TFLOPS). Is it good enough for 720p High 40 fps on games such as Witcher 3, Wolfenstein The New Order, The Evil Within, etc? Or should I go with my initial idea (core i3 6100, RX460, ca.120W).

Thanks in advance for your kind attention.

Honestly speaking...it should just about scrape that kind of performance in games. You would be better off with the i3 IMO.
The next generation of AMD APU's looks more promising.. but you would need to realistically wait 6-9 months untill they're available.

Hi,

Don't forget that the APU is still last-gen and not high-performance.

I would rather get the intel system, unless you plan on getting a zen cpu and dedicated graphics down the line, you could upgrade and keep the same AMD motherboard from this APU.

Depending on your budget I would wait around for the release of the gtx 1050.

On lowest i5 6700K gets 20 FPS in Witcher 3.

Good news for A12-9800 is that is should be better performance (cause GPU...), and putting stronger RAM gives good FPS increase (or rather weak RAM hinders GPU).

But 40FPS?

Do You have (will have) FreeSync display, this may actually help a lot here.?

Sorry, what?

I've seen the old A10 maintatin 40fps while playing Battlefield 3 at high settings. This new APU with ddr4 ram should be MUCH faster. Also, the built in graphics for a i3 cant match the cheapest APU AMD has to offer.

To my knowledge, the new A12-9800 isn´t that much more powerful than previous "gen" APUs. The main good thing is that the performance of A12-9800 (65W) is quite equal to previous gen 95W APU.
So expect about the same performance as 7870, 7890, but with 1/3 less power.

Witcher 3 on AMD A10-7870, with 1080* (Full HD) resolution, had a framerate around 18-23 FPS.
a little slower A10 7850 had 22-24 FPS with 768 resolution (but not lowest settings), so expect a little better than that (25-30 fps) for the A12 9800, but unfortunetly not 40 FPS.

As someone mentioned, the APU uses system RAM, so a good fast RAM may speed up the GPU a little.
