My family is building 3 houses and there will be a communal area where the main media area will be. I was planning on having the main internet from the ISP go to the communal area. From there my plan was to have cables running to each house? Please help me with the optimal configuration and what hardware I will need.

I am thinking of having switches in each house which will run to ethernet outlets that can be used for various devices including routers for wifi in the houses.

I am also thinking of having a server in the media area connected directly to the main router.

Yes, if your houses are in line then connecting from one house to the next will be a 100% working solution. Your aim is to limit the distance of a single network cable, keep it under 80m.

Faux is right again, but you will lose bandwidth when installing a long cable. I have installed a 138m cable for IP...

The house that is furthest from the media area will be about 110m away.

As mentioned the furthest house is about 110m away and the other 2 are less than that (say maybe 80m and 40m away). From the media area the terrain would be mostly garden running to all houses. I hope this is helpful?

Hmm, that is certainly possible but you will have lots of dropped packets at that distance.

Can you put a switch at the halfway point? The switch will act as a repeater and stabilize your signal.

A tiny enclosure box with power at the halfway point with a small switch will solve you problem.

The second house is between the 1st and 3rd. Would you suggest I have a bigger switch in House 2 and have that switch connected to the switch in house 3 rather than an ethernet cable directly from the media area to house 3?

You could always do cabling for the closest houses, and then a wifi bridge for the house that's 110 meters away.
But cabling is always cheaper and speeds will always be better.

The recommended maximum length for ethernet cable is 100m. That DOESN'T mean it wont work at 110m however. I would give it a try with good quality cable.

Faux is right again, but you will lose bandwidth when installing a long cable. I have installed a 138m cable for IP cameras at one site where 6x 4mbits is being transmitted without any issues. However, you need to be in a zero rf interference area for your signal to be clean. You may want to consider purchasing shielded cable to help with that.
