Heres my specs:
Intel Core i7-6850K @ 3.8 Stock
MSI X99A Gaming Pro Carbon
[2Way SLI] Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1 Gaming
Corsair Vengeance 32 GB (4x8 GB) 2400 MHZ DDR4
Samsung 950 PRO 256 GB NVMe M.2 SSD
Western Digital Red 2 TB
Seagate Barracuda XT 2 TB
Corsair Carbide Air 540
Corsair RM1000X 1000W
Corsair Hydro Series H115i

ASUS VG278HR 1920x1080 27" 144 Hz
PHILIPS 227E4LHAB/00 1920x1080 21.5" 60 Hz
PHILIPS 227E4LHAB/00 1920x1080 21.5" 60 Hz

I'm using 2 standart bridges for the SLI bridge as i didn't have a HB bridge.

When I'm benchmarking GPU usages are around 99% on both gpus so no problem there.

But when I'm playing GTA V both gpus' are only being used around 30-50% @ both 4K and 1080.
I get around 110-70 fps @ 1080p and 70-50 fps @ 4K (DSR)

The only reason I got a SLI config is to get 144 fps @ 1080p properly.

Here's the same exact setup getting 99% on both gpus's and 100ish fps @ 4K unlike my 30% on both on 4K;

Here's my nvidia settings.

Any help is appreciated :).

Solution

As you said, you get 99% usage in benchmarks. The GPU usage is...
You just have too much GPU for your CPU. The guy in the video likely had a few settings turned down, such as viewing distances and or was showing locations in the game which aren't bound. GTA5 is a known CPU bound game in a number of areas. Throwing more GPU's at it doesn't help that much.

Find a tweak guide and reduce settings that require a lot of CPU power. You can also attempt to OC your CPU to get a little more power as well.

He shows his settings @ https://youtu.be/_UTvF1HEvQY?t=45
My settings are lower then his settings and on top of that im trying to run @ 1080p and not 4k.
CPU is not bottlenecking.

I also tried OC'ing to 4.4 GHz, no difference.

As you said, you get 99% usage in benchmarks. The GPU usage is way down in GTA 5. That is the classic bottleneck.

Besides the fact his CPU is OC'ed, look at the scene he shows when he shows you that 120 FPS. It's a close up of a car with a building directly behind it. That is just an easy to render place of the game. In many other places of the game, you'll be CPU bound. You may have an issue, and maybe you could get more out of your system, but you are bottlenecked atm. Perhaps even by using the wrong bridge, even if it worked in the benchmark.

Consistent 144 FPS GTA5 is a pipe dream. This is the reality of high FPS gaming, many games simply cannot reach it no matter how much GPU you throw at it, and no matter how low your settings are. Note, I did say many, not all. Depending on the games you play, your ability to hit 144 FPS is going to vary.

EDIT: GTA 5 CPU benchmark:

I feel your pain I have been struggling with the same thing (battlefield 1 beta low sli gpu usage). Are you using any type of OC software such as EVGA precision? If so I tried moving the sliders for temp/power all the way to the right and then did help me.

Howdy.

Your NVME SSD is taking PCIe lanes away too, can you confirm both cards running at 16x gen3?

Try losing one of the cards.

My one single Gtx 1080 could play these games at 144fps @ 1440p.

A single card can easily play anything at 144hz 1080p.

Also are your drivers updated?

Yep latest drivers (372.70), max cpu usage @ 40%, max gpu usage @ 50%, i also confirmed both gpus are running at 16x gen3.

1st card;

2nd card;

Only thing i noticed that is odd on those pictures are GPU Clock and Pixel filrate.
That being said im using Gigabytes own app with this enabled;

It didnt seem to make any difference when I manually set the clock for both cards disabling that option, making sure they are the same though.
If only there was a way to disable this gpu-boost crap.

Will definetly try! My gpu's seem to never go above 82% regardless of the stutters and low fps.

Heres a picture from another game;

(I obviously switched to desktop thus explaining the low usage at the moment picture is taken but it was avaraging 40-50% on both avg)

Altough, I time to time notice stutters and stuff on the desktop (Seemes to be fixed after I disabled high precision event timer) so I wouldnt be that suprised if in the end its a CPU related issue.

But definetly not a bottleneck.

While not definitive, and you can't be with i7's and especially with the new load balance, that does show probable bottlenecking, at least from time to time.

Because i7's have 2 threads per core, you rarely see 100% usage when bottlenecking. They also switch the load from core to core, but there are a couple cores which are showing near, or at bottlenecking levels.

The guy in the video is running the same setup and going to different locations with stable 90-120 fps @ 4K.
Also he has 99% gpu usage on both.

I have 30% usage on both gpus regardless of the resolution, and as soon as the games running i get 90 FPS MAX @ 1080p.
Theres something wrong and I dont really think its the 6850k. (May be a config, but not the CPU itself.)

Sure let me do the test I'll post ASAP.

I have had 16547 score before I re-installed Windows 10 if it helps though.

Does your monitor have gsync? Try disabling that or, uninstall geforce experience. See if one of those helps. It looks like it's a pretty common issue:

Unfortunately, my monitor doesn't support gsync and I don't have geforce experience installed.

My last score on Firestrike Extreme was
Score- 16547
Graphics Score- 19488
Physics Score- 17021
Physics Test- 54.04
Combined Score- 7614

My current score seems around 1500 less then my old version. Quite strange.

I dont have a 3D Mark licence so I can't post a link, sorry.
I will test the gpus later on.

- Tried OC'ing to 4.4 [- no change]
- Tried flashing new BIOS because of; [- no change]
NDQQBUP.png

- Tried optimizing Windows 10 [- no change]
- Tried setting GTA Affinity to High [- no change]
In fact setting it to Very High or to Low makes 0 difference.

I also decided not to bother testing cards individually as it scaled perfectly in benchmarks.

That's a bit foolish. SLI may have issues within the game itself. You should at least rule that out. And the fact you are not using the proper SLI bridge, could give some intermittent issues, depending on the game/benchmark. Testing a single card could also let you see if you are stuck at the same FPS as before. That would at least show there is a bottleneck of sorts or not.

Do you think replacing the dual bridge with a single one can fix my issues?

I also have this if it helps;
