Hi guys, first time poster, but everyday reader on the site and an all day user on my new build.

Anyway, got a weird situation from a new budget build. There's some posts already but I got this new I5 4670 on stock cooler during idle likes to jump anywhere from 45c-55c with coretemp / hwmonitor. On a quick Cinebench run, it maxes at 65c. What my concern is that, it jumps all over the place in the range of 45-55 on the 4 cores. Is that normal?

I've already cleaned and reapplied the thermal paste (pea technique), snapped the plastic screws on, and the temps are the same.

Build consists of:
i5 4670 turbo on 3.8ghz
Asrock h97 itx
Cm elite 130 Case

you got what, 72c on max load? (if so, that's nothing to worry about) it's actually the max temp according to intel lol. But even the normal standard is 28-35c on idle for your cpu, operating temp upto 60, and max 72.

yes, try the new cooler and make sure you have your case fans set up to create a good air flow.

I didn't think I needed a cooler since I wasn't OC-ing.

Maybe not a fair comparison but got a stock dell inspiron with an i5 - 6400 and it just hovers mid 30s all day long.

as BMW-Vision said, maybe your case airflow is poor. try what he suggested.

as far as "i'm not ocing", it doesn't matter if you are ocing or not, the point is that a better cooler will keep your temps down and add stability to your build. You will most likely end up hovering around 40c even if you solve your sporadic temps. ive had a computer with a stock cooler and since then, everytime i just replace the stock one, stock coolers are there to be "good enough" and nothing more. that's why i said don't expect much.

main point is to stay below 75-80c (roughly) while gaming. but that's a pretty small case right? that you got. so yeah you will have airflow trouble

Yeah, I gotcha. If this keeps up, I will need to buy a low profile cpu fan to see the result. Other then re-applying thermal paste and reseating the heatsink fan. Is there anything else?

I've been running the testing with the case open all this time. I just ran OCCT for half hour to see and it maxed at 72. Is that OK? I mean I don't like the idles temps at all. I really like the ITX build and this is getting annoying. I mean, are the i5 haswells suppose to be doing this high?

Well it's heating up today since the case panels are "On", it's already up to 77 degrees on OCCT. I wonder if do the mother board have anything to increase the temp or it's just the heatsink fan/cpu thing that's heat oriented?

Thanks.

the heat sinks that you see on your motherboard do heat up as well, you could check the temps inside of your bios (have a look around they should be somewhere in there)

which case do you have? the inspiron? how many case fans do you have?

The Dell Inspiron 3650 is stock i5 6400. (My current build is a Coolermaster Elite 130 itx has 120mm front fan and 80mm side fan, PSU fan that's it)

Anyway, hey thanks Guss. I forgot I had an 212 evo in the closet. I took everything apart and popped the 212 Evo in and everythings look good now even though everything is outside the case. Maxing only low 52s. Though I won't be able to use the Evo in my case, my smaller low profile cooler is coming from amazon, so gonna cross my fingers.

I guess the issue was the stock fan cooler culprit as usual. Maybe sometimes you get a good one and get to idle at low 40s. Hurts, no OC and I still have to buy a cooler :(

Overall thanks guys. Let's close this case, Thursday night football tommorrow.
