Hello.

I have this problem since yesterday and it would be very nice if someone could help me.

What was my set up before the problem: I mainly use my laptop downstairs so I have an ethernet cable (around 50 feet) that is connected in the lan port of the main router to another router that I use in case other people also want to connect to the internet since the wi-fi downstair is terrible. My laptop is connected to the second router via another ethernet cable. Everything was working fine.

What happened: We rebooted the main router because we had problems with the wireless printer, but after the reboot, my computer started not recognising the ethernet cable. If I connected through the second router it would say ''Ethernet limited'', or ''Unidentified Network limited'' and if I connected my laptop directly to the first router, it would appear and disapear without having the time to connect to the network. I can connect to the wi-fi just fine and when I tried with another ethernet cable (not long enough to replace the one I have) it worked fine too. If it were only for this, I would have changed my cable thinking that it might not be working properly anymore, the thing is, I had another laptop that day that was connected though the same second router as mine. The second laptop couldn't connect to the wi-fi and the internet via second router/ ethernet cable, but it could via the original ethernet cable that was doing the connection between the two router (the one that didn't work with my laptop), so I don't think that the problem is the cable itself.

What I've done so far: Reset my modem, reboot both routers, looked for any driver update, reset the main router.

Note: I don't really care about the second laptop, it belongs to someone who doesn't live in my house, I just want mine to work properly. I'm also sorry if there are any mistakes that I've made that could have made it hard to understand what I'm saying, english is not my first language.

Thank you in advance for your answers, I know that ultimatly I could just buy a new one, but I want to try something before going through the pain of spending money on buying it and spending time on installing it.

Best.
Kath

Does not seem to be a problem with your laptop.

Reconsider ruling out the original ethernet cable as not being the problem.

It does not take much to have a problem plug not work in one computer and then work in another. Or some weakness in the cable that may cause intermittent loss of connectivity no matter what devices are being connected. Just a bit of extra twist, a tighter port, more tension if the cable hangs somewhere; anything thing at all.....

Examine each plug and the length of the cable. Look for kinks, sharp bends, a plug not squarely aligned to the wire. You may be able to find a spot where a bit of movement will cause connectivity to come and go.

There seems to be nothing wrong. We also tried with a third computer and it does the same thing as the second (except that this one can connect to the wi-fi.)

Does the following "diagram" represent your current cabling?

1st Router (LAN Port) --------------50' Ethernet Cable --------->2nd Router (LAN Port) --------Ethernet Cable -----> Your laptop(s)

First router is handling DHCP addressing - correct? What IP addresse does the first router have? What IP address does the second router have?

Have you assigned any static IP's within your network?
