If you give the power button on your case a quick push, this is the same as hitting the Start button and selecting Shut down. So this will close the apps and shut down. It won't save any unsaved data.

If you hold the power button in until it shuts off, then this forces the computer off and doesn't allow Windows time to do a proper shut down. This "could" be bad. Could but not always. Many of us have had to do this when a game locks up your computer and you no longer have access to the Start > Shut down option or the quick power button press doesn't shut down the computer. I'm sure most users have had to do this at least once. In most cases it doesn't have any harmful affects, but it can, and I've experienced it. It's usually...
If you are just pressing the power button down momentarily this just tells Windows to shutdown. Of course if you have any unsaved data in any open applications, you might lose that data. Other than that, Windows is shutting down properly.

Now if you are holding the power button in until it shuts off, this could cause OS corruption, maybe even application corruption for any applications that are running.

It's usually repairable, if you know how to troubleshoot OS issues, but it's always better to shut down properly if you have the choice.
