M5A78L-M LX Plus Motherboard
AMD FX-8320(E) Processor

So here is what I did. My son felt that his processor was running too hot with the stock fan. This is the FX-8320. Bought a Cryorig H7. Pulled out the old cooler and the CPU was stuck to the heatsink. Get the CPU unstuck and discover bent pins. Between the both of us with credit cards, mechanical pencils, etc. the situation gets worse, pins super bent. Drive 1.5 hours away to closest Microcenter (I live in BFE) and get another FX-8320. Get home and realize it is the FX-8320E (it was a good deal!). Put it in the case anyway. Install Cryorig. No beep, no boot, fans running. Did every troubleshooting thing I knew minus tearing everything apart and breadboarding, no beep, no boot. Gave up and went to bed.

I can't work on this again until tonight and I am compiling a list of things to try. I looked at the CPU support page for the M5A78L-M LX Plus and it doesn't have the FX-8320 listed, only the E. So I have no idea what version of BIOS I have, or should have, or did have, and I can't put the old processor back in to boot up and find out because I never expected to have to replace the processor. So here are my questions.

If I do need to flash the BIOS, how do I do it without a working processor?
I did not try resetting the CMOS battery, so that is on the list, could that be it? Please say yes. LOL
Could I have wrecked the socket? And in turn, wrecked the motherboard?
Any other suggestions on what to try?

Thanks!

Oh dear. I was looking at the wrong motherboard. I have the Plus and I was looking at the regular version. For the plus I need an updated BIOS for the E processor! Now what??

Have a look at your motherboard manual linked HERE.

Have a look at page 2-3 which details how to use the CrashFree BIOS. Essentially it's for flashing a BIOS when the BIOS has been corrupted and the system won't POST. Essentially the pickle you're in, but your BIOS isn't actually corrupted.

One thing I would consider before attempting this is to reset the BIOS via the CLRTC jumper. The procedure is detailed on page 1-18 of your manual. Once you've reset the BIOS, try to boot up and see if it POSTs. Many times even though the BIOS doesn't have the microcode for a new processor (particularly AMD CPU's), the system still might POST.

Crashfree BIOS didn't work. Resetting jumper didn't work. Found someone with an old CPU willing to do it for me for a reasonable price. I'd order one on ebay and do it myself but the kid needs the computer for school and is getting antsy. I have a laptop but it's on its last legs. I'm definitely on the hunt for a spare system to mess around with and keep in case something like this happens again.
