I have a GA-78LMT-S2 mobo and an AMD FX 6300 processor with 600W power supply. I'm looking for the best cooling solution so that I can overclock the processor up to 4.0. Any suggestions? Could really use the help. Also running a Radeon RX 480 Graphics card.

Solution
Shouldn't need much to get the CPU up to 4.0... honestly I wouldn't... it's turbo clock is 4.1GHz. Any basic air cooler would do you just fine. Cryorig H7/H5, CM Hyper 212 Evo, I used a zalman cnps9500 on my 6100 and got it up to 4.4GHz stable.

That being said, I had a nice ASUS M5A99X EVO to overclock on. Your motherboard is not so good with power phases. At that point, it's not just the CPU thermals you need to worry about, you're also going to need to worry about your VRMs.
there are some very gud after market heatsinks available...u can take a luk at these suggestions...these are all gud units...
however, most of these units are quite big in size...so u shd take that factor into consideration by matching with ur cabinet dimensions and ram profile...

So if I were to upgrade the Mobo at a reasonable price what would be a good choice? Not looking to replace my processor or gpu. My GA-78LMT-S2 tends to bottleneck at 3.5GHz and that's what I'm trying to eliminate.

Your motherboard shouldn't bottleneck it. If you haven't messed around in your bios your CPU should be boosting to 4.1GHz no problem.

Honestly, I would definitely recommend the motherboard I had (M5199X EVO (R2.0 is now out)). It runs ~$120 on Newegg at the moment, but that's a pretty steep price to pay for an outdated system when you've already dropped $60 on it. ~$200 in motherboards for a ~$100 5 YO architecture CPU doesn't make sense. It's a higher price to pay later on, but you might want to look towards Zen/Kaby Lake.

Experience from an attempt to overclock my roommates 8320 on the A97 and immediately getting thermal margin issues (we had the same cooler, I seated both CPU coolers, I built his machine), and my own overclock on my A99 EVO and getting to 4.4GHz before I hit thermal margins. I understand they are completely different animals when it comes to CPUs--the 8xxx are way hungrier, but it's been said again and again that an A97 isn't great for overclocking. Low overclocking maybe, you can certainly do it, but not if you want to get any benefit from it.

Ya bro you need to get a better mobo no matter what. I have the same exact system as you also. Did you buy it off of cyberpowerpc or bestbuy? The mobo we have only has 3 phases which is barely enough to run the proccesor. I tried to oc it myself and got to 3.7 stable but at 3.8 after 1 minute of a stress test my computer froze so I just returned it to normal with the turbo to 3.8 and it was fine with that. I'm looking myself for a new mobo. You basically just need a mobo with more phases.
