What do 1080p and 1440p look like on a 4K display?

Specifically a 40"+ TV

Currently I'm using a (now small) 24" 1080p TV I bought 4 years ago. It's only got 1 HDMI port and I've got three HDMI devices so as a temporary solution I got an HDMI splitter. Even 1080p TVs of today look better than it does.

I remember I asked this before and the answer was it wouldn't look good. What if I used Nvidia DSR to simulate 4K (I would take anywhere between 33 and 50% hi to my frame rate though)?

Anyone used a GTX 780 at 4K (I know there'll be a performance hit, probably more than is worth it, what about 1440p)? How does it work?

4570 is still ok for today even for 4k, it is not optimal but you do not have to replace it yet.
The GPU is the bigger issue.
Your GTX780 should be able to run 4k videos without any big issues...just not for 4k gaming, if it has to run native 1440p or 4k.
The one which prevent you for gaming above 1080p is only the GPU.

You can get 1440p or 4k, as you wish. Just do not forget to upgrade the GPU too, if you can.
If you do not have enough money to get the GPU, usually, I choose to upgrade the monitor/TV first. You can simply play on 1080p and let the monitor/TV do the upscaling for you.
Things will not be that crisp but...what the heck...
People tend to keep monitors and TVs longer than they keep a PC or GPU.

If you are trying to keep your GTX780 and render the games on native 4k or 1440p...even 1440p is already a problem on games like Witcher 3. You can kiss 4k already good bye.
If you are trying to run 1080p on 1440p or 4k display, yes, you can keep your GTX780. The picture is simply not that crisp anymore, since th upscaling will take place. I ran 1080p on 1440p monitor once in a while, as I had only a single GTX970 on Witcher 3. Things do not look that bad.

It is only a rough estimation, 4k res has 4x 1080p res. You can estimate the fps you might get on 4k by using your current fps. Just divide your current fps by 4. Remove VSync first. Assuming you have enough VRAM.
Just do not forget that going 4k gaming, you will need more VRAM, GTX780 is not up to the job from this point of view too.

I figured it wouldn't run 4K (reason why I've done nothing about 4K so far). One's got to happen first though, either the TV or the computer hardware (currently waiting for computer hardware to get cheaper. As I understand the GTX 1080 can run in 4K, but would 4570 bottleneck it?). So you're saying even 1440p is beyong the 780? That sounds about right though, now I think about it, everything in this computer was designed around 1080p.

Thing is, I'm stuck, I could upgrade to a 1440p display (but then that's temporary solution), or get a 4K display (which, as we both know, my computer won't run games at) or I can keep my TV until it dies. I'd be willing to let it run 4K for things like video, and then have the games run at whatever resolution runs well enough

BTW, try to find monitors/TVs with display port or HDMI 1.4 <--- important
or you will not be able to run 4k 60Hz.

on 4k resolutions u'll need a 1.2 dp cable to run 4k @ 60 hz

the cables you get after buying a 4k monitor gives you a dp cable that handles 30 hz and had to buy a 1.2 dp cable to handle more than 60 hz , and don't run cheap mine ran around 29.99 for the cable
