Hi guys,

So i'm building my first PC and have run into an error. Firstly my specs are i5 2500k, Asrock Z77 pro 4, 8gb g.skill ripjaws 2400mhz. I have not yet bought a GPU and was just testing to see if everything works ok. Obviously these are 2nd hand parts.

When I turn on the PC I get 5 short beeps from the mobo and no display (VGA or HDMI) I've looked up online and I can't find a definitive answer for the beeps.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/322455-30-beep-codes - suggests bad cpu
http://www.asrock.com/support/faq.asp?id=286 - suggests no VGA card

Surely I should at least get the BIOS? Obviously I'm a noob so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

check the cpu socket for bent pins on the motherboard

you have 5 short beeps, not 5 long beeps, so "no VGA card" is not your problem.
the 2500k has integrated graphics and can display over the motherboard´s connectors.

which poewr supply are you using?

Just checked the CPU socket, looks perfect. Reseated, same 5 short beeps

I'm using a raidmax 730w. The only part I am unsure of is the i5, my friend had it lying around for a while. So it seems that's the problem then :(

Yeah that's what I thought haha. Nothing like that, I'll take a photo now.

All fans power on and run. I have already tried resetting the BIOS, twice.

Here is a picture of the socket

So after more digging i have confirmed that the short 5 beeps means CPU, however this could be anything related to the CPU possibly still the board. I'm trying to persuade my friends to test out my CPU in their PC and will report back.

So my friend has 1155 PC. He has a 3570k, tomorrow ill swap over CPUs and see what's what. However he's worried that changing CPU's will mess up his BIOS settings, is this true? Alternatively should I stick his 3570k in my PC instead and see if that works instead of possibly messing with his settings.

Followed the manual, unplugged power, held down button to drain all residual power. Removed the battery. Used the jumper stick or whatever you call it to short the two pins. Left it for a good 30 minutes. Reinstalled everything and tried to start it up. Same 5 short beeps :(
