I'm making my first pc build ever soon and I've ordered all the parts, but my hard drive won't arrive for another month or more. Am I able to use an old hard drive that already has windows 8 on it in my new pc. I have bought a copy of windows 10 from amazon and I want to know how to install it on my old hard drive. I can plug my old hard drive into my old laptop with a usb to sata cable and delete everything of it or should I just connect it to my new pc as it is and then try to install windows 10? Thanks for any help you give.

Edit: The current version of windows 8 on my hard drive is oem and is already being used on my old laptop as I copied all the files from my hard drive to my ssd but never deleted them from my hard drive.

Solution
start from scratch download the media creation tool on the link above I think and then make your new install drive your USB thumb drive install windows 10 on the thumb drive. Now find the hard drive slots in your new case place the hard drive in one of the slots get some small screw's hold it in place atach it with the sata cables and power cables. Now take the USB drive that we made a windows 10 install on then put that in the machine it will ask you where to install windows 10 select your hard drive and it will ask you what you want to do select install a fresh copy of windows 10 and it will format it and you should be good hope I havent missed anything but watch a couple of youtube vids get the hang of what to do...

I've never done this before so sorry if these questions are pointless but will I be able to format it since the windows 8 on the hard drive is oem and is already running on my laptop (I swapped the hard drive for an ssd but never deleted the files of the hard drive) were you suggesting I put the hard drive in my new pc and just load it up?

I forgot you need to select usb device as first boot option in the bios to get there push delete key several times before it starts up
