So I bought a computer about a year ago that the seller thought was broken and in reality he just built it poorly. Inside is a fx 9590 that is extremely unstable above 4.84 ghz. I've tested quite a bit and had to disable default settings with turbo because of this. It's also worth noting my mobo often seems to have power issues with USB ports. My power supply is 850w. I wanted to know if it's worth a shot to simply replace the mobo and hope for better performance from my cpu or should I simply build compelely new?

Solution
What model is your motherboard? There is a very high chance that motherboard is not compatible with the FX9590.

For now, underclocking your cpu is your best option.

Yes, I highly suggest building a new PC. The FX9590 is a 3 year old name with a 4 year old CPU. Unless your willing to wait it out for AMD Zen.

Solution
depends on your uses for it. Recent programs / games, I would go with Intel.

Buying a new motherboard from Intel would cost the same as the AMD one (the proper chipset kinds would be more expensive is what I mean) and then at that rate I'd finish the set with a CPU and RAM personally.

As for the instability, that is likely on the CPU's side.
If I had to take a guess, the CPU and motherboard are both to blame.

• I would agree with all depending on your monetary resources... if you have, buy new.

• And if you don't, underclock the FX-9590 to help it run cooler as overheating may be what makes it unstable. Overheating can cause Power and Data issues so you may find the motherboard is not the problem.

• If you find underclocking doesn't stop instability and USB power issues, do the research to know if the motherboard is compatible with the FX-9590 as most AM3+ mobos are not.

• You didn't mention what kind of CPU cooler is taking care of the CPU... or not!.

You mentioned the computer was built poorly... so I wonder if that involves a crappy mobo and cooler... we know the CPU is not meant to be overclocked, at least not with most available motherboards and certainly not with stock or mild coolers, unventilated cases, insufficient case coolers, inappropriate PC location,...
