Hello,

I just installed a samsung ssd, very fast very nice. I didn't unplug my HDD when I installed windows on it with a bootable usb (I made it with the mediacreationtool) Once I boot my pc up I'm prompted to choose which volume of windows I'd like to use. Volume 1 is my ssd I think.

So basically I had a hard drive for about 6 months. Now I bought an ssd and installed it. And I can't open programs from my HDD. For example I have the microsoft office 2015 installed on my hdd but can't open it from the search menu. Can anyone help me?

Thank you very much in advance!

Solution

1. Boot from the HDD, and copy all your personal data to some other drive. Not the whole drive, but just those things that you want.
2. Disconnect everything except the SSD
3. Install the OS on the SSD. Drivers, OS updates, etc.
4. Once done and it works properly, connect the HDD and wipe it. ALL partitions.
5. Then, it is up to your personal preferance. Install applications on whichever drive you...

This depends.

"I didn't unplug my HDD when I installed windows on it with a bootable usb (I made it with the mediacreationtool) Once I boot my pc up I'm prompted to choose which volume of windows I'd like to use."

This is one of the main issues.
Do want to keep it like this, or not? (ideally, you do not)

No it doesn't.... This is bad right? But on the other hand, I'm thinking to keep this config. Since I didn't have that many applications installed on my HDD I only have to download a few to get going again. So far I'm good.

Personally, I'd fix it. Currently, you have a whole other OS, just taking up space.

There was a guy a few weeks ago.
All of a sudden, his system reverted back to 'last year config'. Thought it was some weirdness with Win 10.

No, it was just a bad SATA cable. Normal power on, system tried to boot from the SSD, could not. So dropped down to the next option...the old OS on the HDD. Couldn't figure out "why it did that".

So If I would want to fix this I think I would have to do the following. Correct me if I'm wrong:

1. Back up HDD (there is nothing important on the SSD)
2. Wipe both the SSD and the HDD
3. Unplug the HDD and install windows on the SSD
4. Get everything setup and plug the HDD back in.
5. Start using the PC like I normally would.

5. Then, it is up to your personal preferance. Install applications on whichever drive you choose. But primarily, on the SSD.
6. Move your personal files to wherever you choose.
