ASUS Z-170A no good for non-SSD drives?

My EVO 850 performs great in this mobo, but any spindle drive sucks as far as speed goes.

Am I missing something here?

A 2TB Hitachi drive does 150MB/s in a USB enclosure, but internally on the SATA ports I get maybe 50MB/s.

What gives?
Drives HAVE to be SSD on the Z-170A?

Thanks,

That is not a known issue, no.

SATAIII should exceed USB3.0 speeds (although realistically, HDDs barely saturate SATAII specs).

Are your drivers up to date? I'd assume your USB drivers are, but maybe not your chipset (including SATA controller) may not be?

What are you using to test the speeds? Is it a consistent test whether looking at SATA or USB?

I copy a 10 GB folder to and from the drives off an SSD, letting explorer show me the current read/write speed.
While this may not be exact, it's close enough. Plus the amount of time it takes for the copy is obvious.
I tried several spindle drives, all with the same result. In a USB enclosure, they perform as expected.

I'm pretty sure that I updated the mobo drivers when I put that rig together a few weeks ago, but I'll check again.

I swapped the black SATA cable with a red one today, and this at least got me up to 50 MB/s.
Not sure why, but it seems that the disks are getting hammered too fast and choke. The EVO does fine though.
Maybe spindels are just getting too old..

Update:

I installed another SSD drive into the system, and it is just as fast as
my SSD boot drive. Around 450 MB/s from and to SSD.

It would seem that there is nothing wrong with the motherboard, except
that platter drives are performing very poorly.
At least in my case. All drivers are current btw.

Maybe I'm the only person who ever tried adding an HHD to this mobo.

I am running the same motherboard and I am having the exact same thing. My primary drive is an SSD and it is as usual great. My 3 regular drives get 50-60mb/s. I cannot figure out why. It is infuriating.
