Alright, here's my situation. I have been experiencing two different kinds of crashes on my PC that I would like help diagnosing to see if it's a Mobo or PSU problem or something else.

1. The First Type of Crash - Blank Screen of Death

- Both of my monitors go black as if they are off (Both have yellow lights on power indicator, indicating no signal)

- LED Case Fans remain on (*NOTE THEY ARE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO PSU NOT MOBO)

- Sometimes GPU LEDs remains on but sometimes off

- CPU Fan sometimes remains on and sometimes off like GPU LEDs

- Sometimes I am able to hear sound from friends talking or from games I play (via USB Headset). Again sometimes not.

-Sometimes I am able to reboot my PC, Sometimes not. Generally, when I can reboot my PC it does the same crash again within minutes of turning it back on.

- This Type of crash generally occurs when I am gaming.

The Temporary Fix: Unplugging & re-plugging in the 24 Pin power connector on Mobo. Only seems to fix the problem for a month then I experience the same type of crash again. Everytime I use this Temp Fix I get subsequent BSOD Crashes.

2. The Second Type Of Crash - BSODs (Blue Screen of Death)

- Again, after I use the temporary fix to get rid of the blank screen crash I get subsequent BSOD crashes and they are very random. I could be gaming, web browsing, or just watching a youtube video and it BSODs.

-They also seem to disappear as randomly as they occur never to be seen until I get the Blank screen of death again.

The Story

The first time my PC crashed with the blank screens was back in July 2016. I was gaming at the time of the crash. I checked all my monitor cables, unplugged and re-plugged them back in which did not fix the problem. Then took a quick look at my components inside the case. I first saw that my LED case fans remained on, but I saw both the GPU LED and CPU Fan was off. I fully powered down my PC via pressing the power switch down for 3-5 seconds. Tried turning it back on, but only the LED case fans turned on and nothing else. As noted above the case fans are all plugged directly into the PSU. I then turned it off again and back on. Nada. Must have done this process at least 3 more times before realizing there might be a cord loose or a hardware problem.

Opened my case up. Turned off PSU Dusted it out. Unplugged the Ram, 24 pin Mobo power connector, along with CPU power connector. Plugged all of them back in. Turned PSU on. PC booted up. Yay! Got back into my game. Within a hour I got a BSOD. Boo! Turned PC back on. It was fine for maybe a few hours then BSODed again while I was watching a video on youtube. It must have kept BSODing randomly like this for a week.

I was quite worried, so I ran a series of tests on some of my components. Prime95 to test my cpu, Furmark on GPU, Memtest on Ram. I found nothing wrong. I just tried to reassure myself that my PC would iron stuff out and I was surprised when mysteriously the BSODs stopped. I then enjoyed peace and harmony with my PC once again for about a month. I started having the same problems again last week.

I was playing a game with a couple of buddies. Suddenly, I got the blank screen of death and my monitor went black. This time though I heard the sounds of the game and my friends talking. I was able to talk with them and let them know my PC just crashed. Looked at my case... GPU LED was on, CPU Fan was on. Case Fans on. Both monitors had yellow lights on power switches indicating no signal. Checked the cords. Couldn't get the display back. I had to hold the power button since I had no display. I rebooted the PC and the program I use to talk with my friends. Started chatting with them about my PC and was about to launch the game and it crashed again. This time though I couldn't hear them or any sound. The GPU LED was off this time along with the CPU Fan, but as always the LED Case fans remained on.

Opened up the case. Turned off PSU. Went straight for the 24 pin Mobo Power connector. Unplugged and replugged it back in. Turned PSU on. PC booted up again. Then I got several BSODs within an hour of fixing the Blank Screen problem. Subsequent BSODS keep occuring. Tested CPU, GPU, and Ram again with 0 problem with those components. BSOD problems still remain.

Final thoughts

Ok if I haven't lost you guys with that long story, Sorry for that just wanted to fill in all the details I could, Anyways I think It's my Mobo, but I'm not 100% sure. I don't think its my PSU but I have no way of verifying that it isn't causing the problems. I forgot to mention also that I have been keeping my PC up to date with all the latest drivers, So I don't think its a software problem. I do think however that whatever component is having issues and causing the blank screen type of crash is affecting my operating system and corrupting files which is causing the BSODs. Anyways, thank you very very much for taking the time to help me!

Without Further ado I present the specs

Mobo: MSI G45-Z87 Gaming

CPU: i7-4770k

CPU Fan: Cooler Master hyper 212 evo

GPU: Nvidia Geforce 780ti Superclocked by EVGA

PSU: Corsair HX750

Ram: 16gb Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz

Drives: Samsung 840 EVO 250gb & 1tb WD Blue

Optical Drive: LG Bluray ( Not sure of model sorry but doubt its a problem )

Case: Antec illusion 1100

Case fans: Corsair Blue LEDs ( have no idea the model, again don't think they are the problem)

Monitors: Asus VS228H-P (Primary Monitor) & 10 year old Dell monitor ( Used as secondary monitor)

And I think that's it. Thank you again so much for taking the time to help me fix this problem.

Have you kept your bios up to date? That board doesn't natively support that cpu, not likely the cause but something to think about. If the unplugging and replugging thing is actually fixing the problem it's a motherboard issue as the power supply doesn't care if it's plugged in or not. (At least thats my 2¢ worth)

I have never updated my BIOS actually. I honestly am not sure how to update it. I downloaded the BIOS from the msi website for my Mobo, but it's not an executable file. I believe it said it was a 292 file type. Another Detail to add is that I built my PC 2 years ago and it had zero problems up until July 2016. Also, What do you mean by my board not natively supporting my CPU?

Oh it's just really weird though. I don't know why unplugging and re-plugging in a cord would fix it. My guess is that it's bending the circuitry in the board itself from the force of unplugging and plugging back in. I try to be very gentle with board during that process, but the board definitely bends a tiny bit. I also make sure I am grounded to prevent the static damage. Well anyways, if it's the board I need to get it replaced.

You say your fans are all plugged directly into your PS-------------and NOT your MB, correct? If so, what are you using for temp control on your CPU?? Usually that function works with both the CPU and the associated fan. This also applies to any other temp control settings in your BIOS. If you're bypassing this control, your MB could be reading "overheat" someplace and deliberately shutting down (CRASH!!!). To me, NOT using the MB-provided connectors is "a disaster waiting to happen"-------if only because NO manufacturer deliberately adds unneeded complexities to an already complex electrical/electronic circuit board. Plug your fans in as the system was designed and see what happens.--------Of course, you may already killed your board by these actions-----only time will tell.
