Is there a huge difference of 4.2Ghz overclock and 4.5Ghz?

In terms of performance, temperature and power consumption.

I was thinking of setting it to 4.2 since I am very afraid of what would happen to my CPU and the temperatures. I will use the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO instead since the rest of my budget would go to the GPU.

So what would be the better choice? 4.2 Ghz or 4.5Ghz since I will only be gaming and nothing more.

If you are only concearned with gaming, OCing right now is a complete waste of time. Do it in 3-4 years if/when that CPu will show it's age. As of today, tehres no GPU on the market that the 6700k can't handle even a couple of wihtout even the slightest issue.

Depending on how CPU bound the game, or how powerful your graphics card is. if you're afraid of overclocking, then it seems like you shouldn't. The process of overclocking shouldn't be scary to someone, because they know they've got the right setup for it and know how to overclock.

If you're not really aware of the quality of your components and how they will handle CPU overclocking, then It's a big NO-NO.

This is currently my set-up without a cooler and a vid card but I'm planning on the gtx 1080ti or the rx 490w hen they release.

Well 4.2 to 4.5 is roughly a 7% increase, if you we're really CPU bound you might just notice a difference in real world performance but unlikely.

The 1080Ti is just rumours at the moment, I have seen no evidence it exists. Some people are saying the new TitanX isn't far enough ahead of the 1080 to squeeze another card in between them and I see some merit to this theory.

Given where the 480 sits against a 1060 I would expect a 490 (again rumour but seems more likely) to be between the 1070-1080 but that's pure speculation. If a 1080Ti does come to market I cannot see a 490 coming anywhere close to it.
