Just bought an Ideapad 100S. I want to expand the storage capacity of the laptop so I was thinking of using my external HDD to install programs and games onto. Thing is, the 1 TB Ext. HDD I have already has movies, music, and other media on it.

Should I be able to use the Ext. HDD with it's existing data and install programs/games onto it?

Thanks!

As long as there is free space, I see no reason why not.

Thanks. My main concern is that it'll format the drive.

Follow up question. Is there any difference performance wise running a program off an Ext. HDD?

No format. Just plug it in.
Performance? Won't be as fast as an internal drive. But this depends greatly on what exact interface you're using.
USB 2, USB 3, USB 3.1, eSATA....
