Hi

I recently purchased a GTX 980 and it is giving me trouble. Whenever I do a benchmark test my PC screen either goes black or my PC powers off completely.
If I lower my core clock by 200 mhz it seems to be stable but I obviously would prefer the card to run on default settings atleast.
My previous card, an old Radeon HD7870 packed up and started giving me artifacts which hopefully isnt pointing to a PSU issue?

Things I have already done:
Reinstalled drivers fully by deleting old manually and in control panel.
Playing around with clocking which is why I figured out if I underclock the card it will work.
The maximum temp it has reached is 60C so it isn't an overheating issue.

I am fairly certain it is either a faulty GFX card or a faulty PSU.

My system is pretty old other than the new card:
PSU: Huntkey APFC 700W
CPU: Intel i5 2320 3Ghz
MOBO: Gigabyte Z68APD3
HDD: Seagate Barracuda LP ST31000520AS 1TB 5900 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive Bare Drive
RAM: 2x 4GB Hyperx Fury 1600 mhz
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

My question is how I can figure out what the issue is? Is this PSU enough?
My dad has a 450W really old PSU so I probably can't test it with his PC.

Solution
While it may be a card and motherboard issue, or just a bad card, I suggest you replace the PSU anyway, it's not a good quality unit, quite a few of the Huntkey PSUs are rated "avoid like the plague". Better power supply will be good for the system overall, even if it does not fix the issue, which it may.
then there was the 900 cards and z 68 compatibility issues with some boards as well [really any older platform] be sure you got a latest bios for your motherboard that may help better support theses new cards ?? then look how manyn of them used sandy cpu's at that ? funny...

quite a few guys when the 970 released [first 900 card released ] found then did not work out too well . may want o google that around

most times its the boards bios need a update

[2012/03/21 not looking too good ?]

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3897#bios

revision 2.0 looks way better 900 cards need full uefi bios that's also easy to look up and see and this may cover it on a rev 2.0 board ''from a evga tech '' You might be able to use the 960. Your board will need to support UEFI, otherwise, your PC might get stuck on the boot screen with an error code.'' for example

[UA9(UEFI BIOS)

sad thing is 900 and above cards are kinda funny on older platforms some work fine some not so good if at all

The PSU has two 6 (+2) pin PCIe cables. Is it really possible that the power supply isn't enough if it is 700W?

700W is more than enough for the 980. It's going to be the quality of it that is the issue.

Going to check my bios now :)

this looked interesting a few posts around on it

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/49dghk/some_users_may_be_experiencing_issues_w_game/

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/921929/latest-driver-364-47-update-caused-black-screen-/

seemed like I had this with that and newer drivers , I'm still on 355.82 with this 980ti

don't know like I said 900 cards can get funny .. NVidia seems to be having a tough time with there drivers as well lately ?

and with the release of the 10 series cards they work on that and older card may take a back seat on the latest drivers ??

another guy just posted behind you with a 980 card ??

look at any like issue with a 900 card and its got to have uefi bios as that evga support guy said on that

''There are only two possibilities.

#1 Both motherboard BIOSes don't support the 980's UEFI vBIOS.
#2 EVGA needs to send you a updated 980 UEFI vBIOS that is compatible with those two boards.''

http://forums.evga.com/GTX-960-on-a-motherboard-with-legacy-non-UEFI-bios-m2450370.aspx

''Bios upgrade fixed this issue for me.. but it means that Nvidia did again some nonstandart thing and mainboard vendors needs to add some new code for it.

And if you are unlucky as Gigabyte MB owners, they will not add code, im glad that i bough MB from Asus a they still are capable to create new bios for 3 years old board.

notice like I was saying another sandy cpu ??

I been following this for some time ..

all you can do is contact any support evga or giga get there 2cents worth and google these things around and see if a fix pops up

''Updating to UEFI BIOS worked '' but a rev 2.0 board ?/

not even a 900 card ?? [and sandy]

new cards and older platforms can be just ''funny'' and seems if using a sandybridge cpu adds to that [I'm sure your not laughing right now ]]

The thing with your system is that if it was a motherboard compatibility issue, you are way more likely to either have a totally non-booting system with no display, or if it boots, it will not see the card properly. You'll get a display but when you try to install the drivers it will tell you "No nVidia card detected" or something similar. Not work but crash under load like what your system is doing.

not nesseraly true with 900 cards . thing is unless you can come up with a process of elimination and prove a faulty part or compatibility its all just guessing

you got to test your card in another known working compatible modern system to try to insure its not a bad card or your psu , a bios update ect,....

its just well known these cards have issue on some older boards / systems some are no problem some are finicky some may not work 100% and some not at all ..

your z68 board plus a sandy cpu plus a rev 1.0 ??

like pointed out here with the rev 2.0 in its latest bios
''2.UEFI BIOS
(When updating from legacy to UEFI, use only the utility attached to your BIOS file)

that's the thing is 900 cards require a full uefi supported bios to fully work that no bios update for your rev 1.0 board offers

this can be a card to card thing as well I see plenty of asus or evga cards not work put well on a board but a msi card did this can also be what bios the manufacture put on there cards , some maybe a bit more compatible where some just are not ..

thing is 900 cards were just funny on how and what they worked on and a lot of them older boards will now only take a 700 series or below if not having a proper bios to support these newer cards

http://www.overclock.net/t/1348026/gigabyte-z68ap-d3-bios-flash-help

how a sandy makes thing more ''funny''

Okay so I am trying a process of elimination here. I successfully (almost) updated my rev 1.0 z68apd3 to an unofficial UEFI but when my pc starts up it stays on the bios startup screen. It doesnt proceed to windows nor do any keys such as delete work to actually go into my bios :( how do I fix this?

cant say ? when you tinker with the bios and flashing that's all your own risk

I would of first tested the card in another capable computer and something newer with a less likely compatibility issue and insured the card was not just a lemon if it seemed to be fine in it then looked at that psu in yours next [ ''an old Radeon HD7870 packed up and started giving me artifacts which hopefully isnt pointing to a PSU issue?'' ]

. then like some guys said swapped out there sandy for a ive cpu [??] notice how a lot of the threads on this have sandy cpus in them ???

I had a thread on that unofficial bios thing with a like outcome as you got thing is its ''unofficial '' even more at your own risk and now hope your able to flash back with out bricking your board

https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18404556

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/48962-unable-update-bios-2.html

thing is its the rev 2.0 that got the uefi update not rev 1.0 from official gigabyte so they know it don't work out or it would of got the same update as rev 2.0 ...

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/62632-gigabyte-z68ap-d3-bios-problem.html

[I don't recommend any of this ] thing is it just how it is with newer hardware on old stuff these days thing just aint as plug and play anymore and you got to be careful

@junky i unfortunately didnt have the luxury of testing with other hardware as I am waiting for my dads new parts. In the meantime I tried doing what I could. Going to test now on the new bios and hope for a miracle. Otherwise Ill have to do hardware swaps.

I understand - I got a buddy with lots of stuff and same for him with me to try things out on if needed to do so ..

I hope I'm wrong on the motherboard bios thing but it is a issue at times on some platforms like yours some got the bios support of like with the rev 2 got the full uefi bios update where your rev 1 did not ??

then may could be the psu ?? or even the card ??? thing is you got no way to verify anything .. like borrow a friends gtx 780 or AMD 7870 or what ever to try in it to see if it fails like a bad psu ??

thing is you got a few strikes against you with that system and that card and may of fell on the unlucky side of things

I wish I had better to tell you on this

I tested the card on a friends rig and it worked. Ran valley benchmark on ultra like a charm.
Reformatted my hdd and used a new hdd and didnt help. Only thing I can think of now is the psu.

Question: what actually happens if the psu runs out of power? Will my pc power off? I guess Ill have to buy a new psu
