Hey all,

Working on a rig for a buddy. More than likely going to go locally to MicroCenter to scope out some deals/bundles and have them build it (can't pick anything from MicroCenter via PCPartPicker right now).

Anyway, he's just looking for a solid gaming rig that will last a few years or so. Primarily plays DotA and Civ, but will probably jump into some modern shooters (Doom) with a new machine. Doesn't do anything else on the machine outside of general use (Office suite, web, etc.). Zero interest in any aesthetics and planning on a 4k monitor - debating between the Sammy 28 and the 32' Seiki.

Here's what I started, recommendations on modifications? Haven't really done much homework yet, was hopeful to have you all tweak this! I'd prefer g.skill on the memory; however, can't buy from them unfortunately. Assuming prices will vary once I finalize hardware (MicroCenter is usually cheaper on the CPU).

Only major area of concern, is that he wants WiFi. I personally like Asus mobo's and adding WiFi to a board, jumps up the price quite a bit. Really worth it to get it on the mobo vs. just getting a usb card?

I'd go for the Samsung monitor personally - I've heard most Seiki monitors are junk. That component selection is a bit overkill for the games you plan to play. For Civilization you really don't need anything more than a 1060. If you're playing games like GTA V or Doom then I can see where the extra GPU horsepower would come in handy.

Here's what I would suggest:

6600k w/ a z170 board. Changed the motherboard because I like the look of that one more and it's in the same price range :p either will work.
Changed to a cryorig h7 as it's a better cooler.
Changed the GPU because with gpu boost 3.0 it doesn't exactly matter how high the card is clocked, so I chose the cheapest one that didn't have a reference style cooler on it. Saves $50.
Changed the PSU to a G2 650W because you won't need the 750W--again, either one will do you just fine.

Changed a few things from genthug's list.

I changed the case to an Enthoo Pro M because I've built in the 200r before and while it's a good budget case, it is still lacking. When you're spending this much, you should get a nice case too. I'd also recommend looking at the phanteks P400. Changed the HDD to 2tb because for $15 extra it's worth the future proofing.

Also if you have NO plans on overclocking don't spend the extra for the 6600k.

Here is the build a bit over budget:

You can remove the HDD for now and tell him to add it down the lane as per the requirement.
Went with i7-6700K instead of i5-6600K.
Corsair RM750x 80+Gold with solid 10year warranty which makes it usable for 2-3 builds with ease. 750W will be useful if decided to add another GPU for SLI in future(never know).
Added a wifi card.
Don't know why is there the need of Optical Disk Drive if not used regularly leave it out to save some bucks.
