I have used recovery media tool + cd's and tried 8.0 and 8.1 home and pro but it keeps asking for a key no matter what.

I currently have win10 on the box but because of vid card acting up with driver issues so putting 8 back on it ... This was recently returned to me from Alienware putting a new keyboard on it and previously it did have a new mainboard put on it with win8. But since i put win10 and now want to revert back it asks for a key ... BAH!

Edit: the box comes with win8 Pro

Solution

Yes, i realize that but windows 8 keys are digitally "injected" into the mainboards so all you have to do is put in the media that pertains to the version of windows (pro or home in this case) and it just installs. So there is no key to enter once it has been done the first time. So you can take a brand new HDD or SSD and plop it int and boot the recovery media and it will just install.

I have discovered the solution. <--------------------------
It turns out that when Alienware/Dell replaced this guys mainboard they just plopped the hard drive back in without "injecting" the windows 8 key into the main board. Not sure how that...
