Sudden spikes in ping and download speed plummets?

Hello community!

Recently (well, for the past month or so) I have dealt with a strange problem regarding my internet connection. Every once in a while it appears that my ping spikes all the way into the hundreds, and my download speed falls from a not-so-bad 10Mbps all the way to 2Mbps, even 0,5 in some rare occasions. Not to mention the other multiple times where the connection is suddenly loss. I've called my ISP and they said nothing was clogging the line, etc... and weren't sure what could be causing the problem. A reset was done, but that did nothing to fix the issue, only resulting in the loss of a couple port-forwards.

Another strange fact is that turning the router off and on again usually temporarily fixes the problem. I'm starting to think it might be a router problem, but I really don't know how to adress this issue.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

P.S. The router was provided by my ISP and it's a Thomson.

Solution
Tell them you think the modem is defective. You really don't have to say a thing, if you are renting it from them and getting poor service tell them to replace it, don't ask.

What should I claim then? Just because I think they won't appreciate the idea of giving out a new router, maybe I'm wrong, but ISP aren't exactly the most generous, lol.

Thanks for the quick reply!
