So I started up my pc and couldn't get it to work. Turns out, one of my ram slots were broken. My mobo (asus z170 pro gaming) has DIMM_A1,2,3,4. the reccomended configuration for 2*8gb ram is 1 in DIMM_A2, and 1 in DIMM_B2. However, DIMM_A2 is broken. When I try to run the cpu with ram in a2 and b2, all the fans and led light up, but the monitor cannot detect my pc. When i run it with b2 only, or b2 and b1, it works. When i try b1 and a1, it doesn't work. with b2 and b1, it displays I have 16 gigabytes of ram.
Is there a fix for this besides from returning the motherboard?
if i keep it at b1 and b2, is there any difference if i did a2 and b2 (if it worked) instead?

Solution
If the mobo is defective, you geta RMA number from the manufacturer and get it replaced under warranty. A third party cooler is a non-stock cooler like your H100. Loosen the screws that attach it then snug them down screw tight

OK, may be a channel problem - couple good possibilities, if you have a third party CPU cooler, it may be too tight in a corner or side. Loosen it up then snug down to screw tight, many try to get as tight as possible and that can throw the CPU out of level so it doesn't have full contact with all pins. Another is bent/broken pins in the socket - if neither of these then it's prob a just a bad channel/mobo and may want to RMA ;)
