I have a Core2 Duo rig and my mate wants it to be beefier.
I am using the Core2 Duo E8400 (3.00GHz) and I thought that since the best LGA775 socket CPUs are Core2 Quads, would one be a good idea to buy? Perhaps the Core2 Quad Q9650?

SIDE NOTE: My mate only has 25 quid to spare

System specs currently
Core2 Duo E8400 (surprisingly awesome for a C2D)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 1GB (low power version)
8GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz
405W PSU (generic but newish)

Solution
If your board supports it (and not all do), any Q9xxx would be an upgrade. The higher clocked ones are better, of course, but they're also more expensive.

What motherboard are you using? You might be able to get a Xeon X/E54xx for less than the equivalent Q9xxx, and perform the Xeon Mod on it...

For the record, the Xeon E5450/X5450 is equivalent to a Q9650, and the X5450 can be had for around £15-20.
A 2.5GHz Xeon E5420 (Q9300) or 2.6GHz E5430 (Q9450) can be had for under £10.
