Hello,

I just bought a new EVGA GTX 1070 FTW and I am still having some lag spikes.
I am talking about the screen freezes for like 0.1 second or so. I am having from 70 to 140 FPS in Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield 4. When I have the lag spikes, there are now big frame drops or what so ever. I even have them with V-sync on, then the FPS drops from 60 to 55 FPS or so.

I am sure that the lag spikes are not caused by the graphics card. The drivers are up to date. Maybe it is the CPU (bottlenecking?) or my RAM memory?

This is my PC:

Intel i5 4460.
EVGA Geforce GTX 1070 FTW
8GB Ram.
Z97S SLI Krait Edition.
1000 GB HDD.
250 EVO Samsung SSD.
Seasonic M12II Evo 620W.

Please help me! Thank You!

You still have some lag spikes, does this mean you had another thread regarding this issue? Or a problem you had, thought would go away with the 1070?

Bit of background of your PC would be very helpful please. Like any previous part changes / how were games performing before / Which operating system are you running and was it an upgrade?

Have you checked CPU/memory activity while idle for any background running programs consuming too much of either?

Have you tried a reinstall of Windows?

If you did an upgrade, did you do a fresh install afterwards? Continuing from an upgrade can often cause annoying problems.

Have you checked your memory is performing with a memory benchmarking tool? *Mentioning this stab in the dark* because i have come across someone here with lower than expected memory bandwidth (Was like almost half the performance he should be getting) due to motherboard compatibility issues with this set of ram. It did impact the performance of his gpu which was either a 1070/1080, i don't remember. Swapping different memory brands however got him the memory bandwidth numbers he was comparing to and got him the performance he was expecting from the gpu as well.

And check your temps are ok.

Check the cpu usage and gpu usage with MSI afterburner.

What is the cpu usage while gaming? because both those games you mentioned are cpu heavy, and it is probably the cpu bottlenecking the 1070. I play the same games as you and also a 1070, but mine is paired with an i7 4790 and I have no fps drops what so ever.

I wouldn't be suprissed if your i5 4460 is running 100% while your 1070 is running at 60-70%.
And you have 8gb ram? is 2x4 or 1x8?

I replaced my MSI 960 4GB with the EVGA FTW 1070, and replaced my H97 Gaming 3 for the Z97S SLI Krait Edition.

I have reinstalled windows twice, but not after buying the 1070 and the Z97s Krait Edition.

My RAM is around 60-70% usage when playing games, CPU mostly around 80-90%
and might sometimes peek too 99%, But I only tested that with my old GPU and MOBO. Probably it is still the same.

Temperatures are more than fine.

I haven't tested my CPU usage with my new GPU and MOBO yet. But when I did with my old GPU and MOBO, it was around 80-90% and peeked sometimes to 99%.

My Ram Memory is 1x8GB.

My connection is not the best, but I can tell the difference between Internet lag and screen lag. This is definitely screen lag.

Play the game in offline mode and see if the problem occurs. That way, you rule out the connection.

I think you have found your problem, add another 8gb stick of the same ram, 1x8gb is sometimes to slow since its single channel.

And I think your i5 4460 is now at a constant at 99% usage since the gtx 1070 is a hell of a card. But there is not much you can do about that besides upgrading your cpu, first try to add another 8gb stick of the same ram, and see if your happy with the performance.

Did you have lag spikes with the 960 though? And since you've changed the motherboard out for another, reinstalling Windows would be a good idea to try if i understood you correctly that you haven't yet.

original thread:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-3142477/good-lag-spikes.html

it´s not helping us to find a solution for you, by adding threads that already discussing the whole thing.

for now, here are some things you could try:

add another 8GB of RAM
BIOS update
fresh install of windows
driver uninstalling with ddu uninstaller and fresh install of nvidia.com driver
offline gaming
run 3dmark basic edition and post the link which comes up in your browser

which other thread is it in this forum?

check hdd/ssd with its manufacturer´s tool
firmware up to date of these?

BIOS up to date of the Motherboard? flash in BIOS itself not in windows!

check temperatures under load by using prim95 version 26.6 with option small fft + coretemp
furmark burn in

both for at least 10min

install memtest86+ (autoinstaller) on an empty usb stick and boot from it

I was already planning on buying extra 8gb ram! I will test if that helps, thank you!

The lag spikes where a lot more common than they are now with the 1070 (as you would expect (; ) I will try re-install windows. But I doubt that would work, but I will try.

I will try all of that, thank you for your response!

It should help, but I just read that you swapped motherboards? So after you changed the h97 mobo for a z97 mobo you didn't reinstall windows? Did you install the z97 chipset drivers though?

The difference is that I would liked it to be solved with the new GPU I have now, but it isn't. Actually it is different because of the different GPU and mobo.
