I recently upgraded my gt 730 to a gtx 980 ti amp omega.
When I'm gaming, certain games after about an hour the computer will completely shut off. It doesn't post a BSOD before it shuts down, just an instant off.

The gpu temp does not go beyond 68°c and it operates 60-80% in all games. The cpu operates at 100% and at 70°c.

My pc specs
i5 4590 stock cooler

Gigabyte z97x gaming 5

Corsair vengeance 2x 4gb ddr3 1866mhz

Zotac gtx 980 ti amp omega

1tb WD blue

Cooler Master g550m 550w

1 12cm casing fan

At a very first glance, my nose tells me it could be a power issue.

Can you give us the power cable layout you're using?

Let me explain a bit: the PSU has many 12V cables and some arrange the "power lanes" differently. So, if you're using all of your 12V power needs from a single rail, then you might be overloading the PSU. In particular, 12V stuff inside your PC usually are: HDDs, SSDs, CD/DVD/BD-ROM, CPU/MoBo 4/8 Pin Power Molex and GPUs.

The second potential issue is the CPU not getting enough cooling. From the upgrade, the amount of heat you're now producing inside your case is quite a lot more, so the CPU cooler might not be able to keep up with the current airflow inside the case. Try managing the airflow of your case to make the CPU have some fresh air and not use hot air from the GPU.

And a third potential thing I can think of, is the PCIe 16x lane you used. Some MoBos have issues when you use, for example, the bottom PCIe 16X slot, because in reality it's just a 4X with a 16X interface.

Cheers!

EDIT: Typo.

Ok, then since we can discard heat and driver issues, let's continue with the power theory.

From what I remember, the GTX980 uses 2x8-pin connectors, right? Can you tell me how you connected them? Did you plug the 8pins from the PSU directly to the video card or you used "dongle adapters" to get the 8pin from elsewhere?

Cheers!

Uhm... I can't really think of any other potential issues, really.

The Video card is correctly inserted into the PCIe slot and all that I would imagine...

What if it's not the Video card, then... You could start looking at the CPU as a potential reason.

Cheers!

Not initially, no. That PSU is rated for 45A through the 12V rail. The GTX950ti is rated for 250W of power, which translates to ~15A taken from the 12V rails. Plus, that PSU is single rail, so the more reason to not thing it is the case. That is why I didn't take it into the picture.

Now, that doesn't mean the PSU *is* failing, but that'd be something very hard to confirm without you plugging in another card you're 100% sure works fine.

Cheers!

I've placed my gpu in the 2nd pcie slot will it be a problem? During high physx situation in game also makes my pc shut down. My i5 4590 temps hit almost 75°c at 100% while gaming for 20 mins. Right now I'm not exactly sure which is the cause for the frequent shut down that only occurs while gaming & video editing. I have allocated $80 to solve this problem as soon as possible.

Changing the PCIe should only affect the speeds on which the Video Card transfers data from and to RAM, but nothing else.

If that doesn't solve it, try going the "new PSU" route with those 80 greens.

In any case, post whatever you find here.

Cheers!

You might want to create a new thread for that question in the PSU section.

And you can check the link provided by maxalge to see if that PSU is good enough for you (in terms of quality).

You need to check the 12V rails and see how many Apms it gives.

Cheers!
