Hi Everyone,

I am looking out for a PSU for the build below: -

Intel Core i5-6600K
Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
Kingston Hyperx Fury 8GB DDR4 -2133 Mhz
Kingston 240 GB SSD

I am going to use it for development at the moment but I might throw in a GPU 6 months down the line and start gaming.

My biggest problem is the PSU. I am from India and PC hardware is very expensive here. Most people here would buy a cheap low cost PSU that is locally assembled and is very bad at quality. Most gamers would buy Corsair VS550 which translates to around 50$. Having read that VS550 is not really a good PSU, I am on a hunt for something better for my expensive build. Now I have some availability, price and RMA concerns with various brands as listed below: -

Corsair - There is a local distributor near my place who has just VS and CX series. Prices for 550W models are in the $50-60 range. There is a service center also for RMA. Products from higher series are available online on sites like Amazon but the prices are ridiculously high. Something like 2X-3X the price in US.

Cooler Master - Can't say about availability at local stores. Some PSUs from B series, GM and thunder series are available online. Prices are inflated but still manageable for lower series. RMA is possible. Here are some example links -

Seasonic - I really wish to buy this but its not available at local stores. Its available at the only official distributor in the country who is also responsible for RMA. These guys have an online store and also have their offer on one product on amazon. RMA is going to be a pain as the dealer is 1700 Kms away and one has to send the PSU to the dealer by himself. Prices are again really bad but if S12II is really worth the money($88) then, its probably the only PSU for which I can stretch

Antec - There are some models on Amazon and primeabgb, prices are kind of acceptable but there is no info on RMA support.

Solution

Correct, it is not compatible with Haswell sleep states. It will still work though and given his choices.....
both the VS and CX series PSU from Corsair are tier 4 units and i wouldnt trust them to power a overclockable computer. Spend the extra coin and get the Seasonic, the S12II is a nice tier 2 unit more on the boarderline tier 1 you wont have any issues with it.

If that is the case, can i go with seasonic 430 watts instead of 520, considering that I might drop in a GPU in the future plus I might try overclocking as well. There is big price difference between the two.

The 430 would be good enough for most newer GPUs such as the GTX 1060 and the system you have. If you're going to overclock too it may be wise to go for the 520 just for some headroom. While its unlikely to need that much, for overclocking a cushion is always good, especially if you overclock the GPU too.

I see, S12II is not compatible with C6/C7 sleep states. But does skylake use these sleep states? Will I need to take necessary steps to use this PSU with skylake?

Guys I have just checked my motherboard manual, Below is the link to pdf. Looks like Z170 pro gaming is at auto mode by default for cpu C states. Does that mean that the bios will take care of it automatically and would not require any intervention from my side? Request you to please try and answer asap coz I had placed the order yesterday and the psu is already on its way.

I have also tried searching online for haswell ready psu. I can't find anything with a reasonable price tag except Thermaltake TR2 600W or some corsair ones which all seem to be haswell ready as per the following list -

Then there is Seasonic M12II 620W on Amazon with a price tag way beyond my guts.

Also, its pointless to even try and ask the local IT store guys at my place for a haswell ready psu, I am sure they would not be able to understand the whole matter.
