Hi Guys,

So I just upgraded many parts in my PC.

I'm using gtx1080 with msi z170 motherboard.

I installed msi afterburner for OC a few days ago.

Today I went crazy and for no reason added extra to the core and memory clocks to the gpu and turned off auto.

After I clicked apply the whole display went blank.

Now everytime I restart the PC it goes into Windows 10 and after a split second display turns blank again.

I've tried everything to stop this from happening but nothing's working including:

- remove all connections from gpu card and try to use the motherboards hdmi connection. Doesn't display anything.

- Trying to boot into safe mode:
On bios screen tried pressing F11 and choosing to restart with more options. When it restarts and displays 10 options to choose from my sub keyboard doesn't function on this screen at all. I've tried unplugging and plugging in again, lights turn on keyboard but keys don't do anything.

I'm all out of options :(

Please can someone recommend what I can to fix this?

In the boot menu of Windows 10 I can get to the command prompt but I don't know if there is a command I can type here to force reload into safe mode?

I have a feeling everytime I'm restarting into Windows msi afterburner is auto starting and setting the parameters I chose earlier.

Thanks for the help.

For trying to connect the keyboard/mouse, try to connect them to an USB 2.0 port if possible. In some cases the USB drivers are not loaded until the OS is loaded, so any peripherals in these ports will not work if the OS isn't booted. This might be why your keyboard isn't working, although I thought Skylake had addressed this issue already.

@mcnumpty23, you genius!!! Thanks you so much!! That solved my 2 hours of panic and sweating.

Sorry I picked your second answer as the solution when I should have picked your first one :(

Unrelated to this topic as problem solved, but the reason why I wanted to overclock is because when I'm playing games since the upgrade my gpu is always going to 84c temp and 99% usage!!! Surely that's not supposed to happen all the time?? I didn't have software to check before so can't compare it. I am doing some CPU overclocking from the bios but surely that shouldn't affect the gpu right?

no problem not the first person i have helped with this so knew right away

and 99% usage will depend on the game and 84c seems a little high but depends which model of 1080 it is,how hot your ambient temperature is,how good your case cooling is,what fan profile you have on the gpu

and cpu overclocking wont affect your 1080

Thanks for the answers guys. I've only just upgraded the whole system. Including motherboard power supply and CPU plus cooling and fans.

On the i7 6700k I've got a corsair h200i liquid cooling installed without the stock fans. Instead used corsair sp120's fans to clear heat from radiator. Also I never did the new build myself it was done by PC expert tech that came to my house and did it.

The case seems to have very good ventilation and CPUs are very cool, at max going to 50c.

Gpu fan is going straight to 70% when it is at 86c and 100% usage. I can feel the hot air blowing out the side of the case where the holes are and this is also where the gpu is based around.

Fan profile on gpu in afterburner is just set to auto. GPU is Gigabyte G1 gtx1080. Games I've tried are Homefront 2 and Rise of the tomb raider.

Then you're probably just hitting the limits of what your specific GPU can do. That 86C temperature is a bit high, so I wouldn't try to push it much further. It should still be able to power through all 1080p and even a good amount of 4K gaming, though, so I wouldn't worry much at all.

think that might be corsair h100i dont think they do a 200i

86c seems a bit hot gigabyte cards usually have very good cooling

but if you have a very high ambient temperature it would affect the gpu temp

if your ambient temperature was say 22c/70f i would expect about 10c cooler than that 86c

Yes it seems to be running the games fine on both 1080p when i play on the monitor and 4k when i play on the projector. Im just worried that its always going to max usage, and that it might burn itself out rather quickly!!! Its nothing with the amount or lack of power going to it is it?

Anyway i have tried custom fan curves in afterburner and made the fans on the card run faster for there currently set temp levels.

I will see how that plays out over the next day or so. If that doesnt make a difference then im going to try set my system fans to run alot faster!

When im juust using windows and not playing anything then the temps still sit at around 40c. I cant remember how much i had with my old motherboard and fans but i think it used to sit around 32c and even then the fans used to be completly off on the card at that temp.

I'm still thinking something may be off in the air circulation in your case, which might be causing a hot spot at your graphics card. But in terms of actual longevity, the GPU will be fine at 86C peak temepratures. It would be nice to lower it, but it's not at risk until it gets close to or over 100C. The only concern about running the fans faster is that they might wear down, so you'd have to replace them or replace the graphics card cooler, neither of which is usually much fun.
