Hello,

I just purchased a new home and it has built in ethernet wiring and a panel inside my master closet. I got Time Warner Cable installed and the modem is installed inside the panel. I'm using an ac88u as my router which is currently connected to the modem. However there isn't a great spot for the router in my closet and it's just sort of laying on the ground. I was wondering if it was possible somehow to relocate the router in another room.

Thank you.

Yes you can run VLAN's. This way you can run multiple virtual LAN's over one cable. You will be limited to the speed of a single port, though. So if you run gigabit then the VLAN from your modem will share the gigabit speed with the VLAN to your network. If your internet speed is less than 500Mbit then this usually is not a problem. So what you would need is two managed switches. One in the closet and one next to your router. They could be as small as something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N0OHEMA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1. You may want to put a little larger one in your closet so you can connect all your house ethernet to it. Anyway you would run ethernet from the modem into the closet...
Uh... What connects the ac88u to the modem, an ethernet cable no? so this cable is a few feet long, but it can go across the house yes? Yes. And so lucky for you, right here in this location all your house's ethernet jacks terminate here. LUCKY! So decide where you want the ac88u to be, all it need is an ethernet wall jack near and BAM! I know this is new for you, but is really simple:

Modem ----> Ethernet Switch ---> Ethernet jack Jack in closet ---> House Wiring ---> Room Wall Jack ---> ac88u.

Not yet discussed but you must have an Ethernet Switch at this location to hookup many ethernet devices.

If your using your AC88u as a router then you can locate it anywhere you have two ethernet jacks. You will need one ethernet cable from your modem to your router and then one from your router back to your main switch. You can make it work with a single ethernet cable if you run VLANs, which would require a managed switch near your modem and one near your router.

If there is only one wall jack there are there any other options I can take?

Then from that switch over to the switch next to your router (through your one ethernet jack). From there you would connect one cable from that switch into the WAN port of the router and one cable into a LAN port on the router. You could use as few as two VLAN's. One VLAN for WAN and one for your internal network. If you choose to go that route I, or many others here can help you set up the VLAN's.
