Reddit moves a bit fast. Not much of a reply there.

So I've got a 2009 Linksys 160N modem-router.

I use it for two wired computers. I disabled wifi on it. No wifi, no SSID broadcast. It was just for splitting the wired connection. That's all I cared about.

I think it's 100MBps. Bottleneck possibly. I need to double check on that, but it's probably not so much of an issue.

So I'm thinking about using wifi now with a little Chromebook and older laptop. Not at the same time. Apartment set up, a few drywall walls. I think I got 40% signal where I want to use it in the other room. That seemed good enough.

I'm thinking security....

Is my current 160N secure enough?

Would a new router be a benefit, esp. in terms of security? I don't see anything wrong with being a little paranoid about neighbors or someone driving by trying to crack passwords. It's possible. People are tech savvy and that ambitious where I am. Fun little project for some high school tech kid. If there are any security concerns with this 160N then it's out, if a new one will correct that. That's the price of progress.

Any recommendations on a decent, proven router? In general or in terms of security. I glanced at a few today, but I doubt I need I need a $200+ router. Around $100 felt better, give or take.

Ideally, I'd like to have the SSID broadcast off, connect, have just the one or two devices I'm using be whitelisted and everything else blacklisted. I was issues connecting yesterday when I switch off SSID broadcast and tried whitelisting. Connect... then try again... and again... I'm pretty sure it was still getting rejected although being whitelisted. For connecting without the SSID broadcast, I wasn't sure on all the additional set up options.

I would like to use the Chromebook I think now and then in another room. The other alternative is a looooong ethernet cable. That's still possible but it sounds like a pain in the butt too in terms of cost, aesthetics, and actually using it like that. Wifi is way easier.

The solo reply on reddit is making me think my current router might be ok as it is. I thought there was something better than WPA2 personal out in the past few years.

That device supports WPA2 encryption on WIFI. That is the best there is. If you use a strong password (12 - 15 characters with upper, lower, numeric, and symbols) then you will be fine.
disabling SSID broadcast, MAC filtering, don't significantly improve your security. They are a false sense of security only.
