So i just pulled my external drive back out to watch some movies off it only to find that windows is forcing me to format it. so i go to format, and i notice i only have the option of formating it at 472gb. so i go into windows explorer and windows recognizes it as a 472gb drive. ive had this drive for years and its labeled as 1tb. i dont really care about my movie collection as i can get all that back, but id like to figure out why i can only use less than half the storage of my drive.

Hey there, @Assassin0706!

I'd recommend going to Disk Management to see how the volumes & partitions of the HDD are listed there. Posting a screenshot of it here would be really helpful, too. You could also try to reformat it from there by deleting all the volumes on the drive and then create a new one. Hopefully, this will make your 1 TB capacity available again. If not, you could try using your HDD manufacturer's formatting utility, there should be such on their official website. In case there isn't, you could also use third-party formatting tools.

Keep me posted with the details! Just make sure you have a backup of those movies somewhere else first.
Good luck!
