I am planning to buy my first ever pc build. I am thinking of buying a MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X graphics card. Do i need a Z170 MOBO for me to overclock it?

Solution

You do not need a Z170 MB to overclock your GPU. However, if you have a K series CPU, like the i5 6600K or i7 6700K, a Z series MB will help a lot with overclocking those CPUs.

Any MB can be used to overclock a GPU. The MB is not used to do the overclock, it is all done via software at the GPU level.

EDIT: Why don't you tell us what your budget is, and what you plan to do with your PC. Maybe we can help you pick some parts and help you optimize your choices.

It would probably be better for overclocking, but you can overclock the GPU on basically any decent motherboard, as long as it isn't some cheap thing like the factory Dell ones, then you should be able to. With the Z170, that board is generally made for overclocking and high performance rigs, and would probably be a much safer overclock on that board, rather than some cheaper one.
