Gtx 960 2gb amd fx 670k 8gb of RAM I get fps dips to 30 and 40. Seems A lot of other people had FPS drops for no reason and none of the fixes seemed to work. What can I do?

Solution
Didn't realize the FX 670k was a thing, apparently only from OEMs. Looks like a FX 4300 built onto the FM2 platform, so not even as impressive as an A10-6700 which is a true quad core.

That would be the slowest part in there.

I've never had issues with the Borderlands series, just a heavy modification to the basic Unreal engine. Requires a lot of CPU to calculate player weapon stats/damage I imagine.

GTX960 2GB should be enough for 1080p. Unless you are exceeding 2GB of VRAM, then it would be a simple matter of disabling AA or lowering some textures.

You seem to have mixed AMD and Intel models up somehow for your CPU. FX6300 would probably be a small limitation. An FM2+ processor like an A10-6700k would also be a limit. An Intel 6700k would be their latest consumer i7 and it really isn't possible to have a better processor for gaming.

Something could be overheating and throttling back. If you left V-sync off and it rendered 120 FPS, overheated, downclocked, and then was only able to render 40 FPS until it cooled down...

List these fixes you have tried.

I can assure you that there is no thermal throttling. Temps are fine for both CPU and GPU cpu temps never go above 55 degrees celius. I have tried turning physX to low turning all the settings to low playing at 720P tweaking .ini files to turn off dynamic shadows.

OK, so you have the Athlon version of the A10-6700 chip (FM2 socket). Of the Borderlands 2 CPUs (http://www.techspot.com/review/577-borderlands-2-performance/page6.html), that's probably going to end up around the Athlon II X4 645 in performance. The GTX 960 is roughly comparable to the GTX 680 they tested with (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1494?vs=1596, http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html).

So, if anything, I would expect you to be getting 30-40FPS @ 1080p resolutions in that game, based on the CPU & GPU combination you have.

There's not a whole lot more you can do CPU-wise with that system -- maybe trade it out for an FX-770K or an Athlon X4 880K (depending on which would be available), but that's assuming your motherboard can handle it -- the latter being FM2+ CPUs, which may or may not be compatible with your board. Again, depending on the board you might be able to OC your current CPU with an aftermarket cooler, but there might not be a whole lot you can do with that.

If you're concerned about the FPS, experiment with your settings & resolution, starting off with increasing the resolution & quality (if possible). Since that dumps more of the workload onto the GPU, you'll probably see little to no change in your performance if your CPU is in fact holding you back. If that doesn't work, try turning down the details & resolution to see if you get an FPS boost.

Sounds like borderlands 2 is just an un-optimized pile of crap. I can run newer games like overwatch the witcher 3 tomb raider and even skyrim with enb's at around 60 fps and sometimes well above that, and you're telling me that I can't run a game from 2012. Lmao.

I'm wondering if it's just an OEM-specific variant that AMD developed. The reference in the Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_accelerated_processing_unit_microprocessors) referred to a Tech Power Up article back in 2014, where HP was offering desktops with the chip. Seems to be some sort of an A6-6790K (tweaked with lower base/higher Boost clocks) & onboard graphics disabled. Which is weird, because its specs are almost identical to the Athlon X4 760K (3.8/4.2GHz for the Athlon vs. 3.7/4.3GHz for the 760K, but their L1 & L2 caches look identical), although the FX apparently uses less power (65W vs. 100W). Note that, like the Athlon & FX chip, the A10-6700 is a Richland chip with 2 Piledriver modules.

Seems to be listed with the A series family certainly. Based on the stats I would agree it falls in as an A10-6700 without graphics. Wonder why they went with that name rather then call it an Athlon 770k or something. Only FX chip in the FM2 socket.

You require a better CPU. Borderlands franchise is VERY single core performance dependent, something AMD is very poor at. You require a Intel CPU if you want a more consistent and higher frame rate.
