Hey guys, I've been researching for a while now about what I should do with the current system I have and I decided to join the forums to see what everyone thinks (specifically about my setup) and how I should proceed.

My build:
M5a99x Evo R 2.0
R9 270x
AMD FX-8320
8gb corsair vengeance ram
650w Corsair 80 plus certified bronze
1080p 60hz BenQ monitor

I want to upgrade my GPU to something that will run the type of games I play on the highest settings with 60 fps at least. I was thinking of a GTX 1060 6gb but I'm really unsure because I'm not the most computer-savvy person out there, and I don't know anything about "bottlenecking", overclocking and whether I'd have problems or not. I'm also on a very tight budget, being a college student.

The type of games I struggle to play on high settings without lag: Rust, Battlefield One (beta), The Forest, etc.

I know my post is a little long and all over the place, but what do you think I should do? Should I get the GTX 1060 (if it'll run games the way I would like it to) or a different graphics card? Should I wait maybe a year after the new Zen CPU's release and change pretty much everything?

Heading to class now so I will respond in a few hours. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Solution
Yes Gigabyte is a good brand for Motherboards and GPU's. The one you linked looks to have a higher overclock so that explains the unreasonable price jump but will serve you well.
A gtx 1060/rx 480 will be a good upgrade from your current r9 270x. Even if the fx 8320 will bottleneck a gtx 1060/rx480 it wont be huge, and it will still be a huge upgrade from your current gpu.

A gtx 1060/rx480 are great cards for 1080p 60fps.

What PSU do you have?

I agree that the 1060 would be one of the best options on a budget to get you gaming at max settings on most of the games you listed. Battlefield One will still go through changes before its final release so it is hard to judge that game since it is in beta release right now.

I think I will do that then. I'll look over the different brands and pick the one with dimensions similar to my R9 270x (cause that's a pretty large card).

Oh, I also noticed I can get the 3gb GTX 1060 or 6gb one. Which one should I go for?there's currently one 3gb one on sale for $300 CAD, and the 6gb ones are around $390 CAD. I don't mind spending a bit more if it'll be worth it.

The one I'm thinking of getting: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127963

The 3 GB cards actually have less performance due to the GPU chip having more parts disabled. Nvidia is boning up for another lawsuit with the naming of this card due to the performance difference and not distinguishing them better, as you just found out. The 6 GB versions are the full 1060 GPU chip so the performance is much higher than the 3 GB cards.

EDIT: here is a write up on exactly what I am talking about : http://www.anandtech.com/show/10580/nvidia-releases-geforce-gtx-1060-3gb

Ohh I see, so less performance. That's good to know actually. That article made me realize that the 3gb one shouldn't even be called a GTX 1060 because of how different it is. Similar but still different.

I've cut my choices down to two different ones then:

The original one I wanted to get (MSI): http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127963&cm_re=GTX_1060-_-14-127-963-_-Product
or
(ASUS): http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814126122

I'm considering the Asus one because it's 0.7" shorter in length compared to my R9 270x, and the MSI one is 0.7" longer. Either way I don't think it'll make a huge deal, wires are a little snug but I can ask for someone to help me with cable management (irl).
Any final thoughts? I think either of these brands will be good.

Edit: Warranty lasts a year longer for Asus. That's another plus.

Yeah that's why I'm leaning more towards the Asus now that I think of it. I opened up my case and it's more snug than I remembered. Perhaps it'll be okay, just very snug; my R9 270x is 10.24 inches.

I also did not notice that specific one, seeing as I am looking at the Canadian newegg, newegg.ca. It turns out, that specific card you listed is out of stock in Canada, and it would only show me newest version of that card, which is $375 CAD, which is still cheaper, still has the same 3 year warranty and is also another good brand right? Also even smaller than the Asus one, but some people say it runs a little hot:

I think at this point it's just pickiness. Either choice would be a good purchase right?
