the drive starts up then stops turning. I can hear it searching but it stops turning and is not recognized.

This sounds pretty unfortunate, @RaRelis! :( I'd definitely not try to re-initialize it if you have important data on it. Moreover, this CRC error might indicate some sort of damage/corruption on the HDD. I'd advise you to check the health and SMART status of the external using its manufacturer's brand-specific diagnostic tool to determine that.
If it's indeed a failed hard drive, you should definitely consider contacting a professional data recovery company for assistance as they are your best bet on getting those photos back. Any data retrieving attempts by yourself could potentially do more harm, than good, especially if the damage is physical/internal.

Keep me posted with the SMART data results, though & good luck...
Welcome to the TH Community, @RaRelis!

Can you please provide more details about the troubleshooting you have done so far? I'd suggest you check how the external drive is detected if plugged in another USB port on your computer and also try using a different USB cable. If you have access to another PC/laptop, try connecting the HDD there as well and see how it will get recognized by the other system.
I'd also suggest you go to Disk Management and see if the drive is recognized there. Posting a screenshot from there would be really helpful to us?
What is your OS version? Have you had any recent updates?
As soon as you can access the data on the external drive, make sure you back it up (copy it) somewhere else as well. This is the surest way to avoid any potential data loss.

Good luck & keep us posted!

Yes but the drive comes up uninitiated. when I try to initiate I get a cyclic redundancy error. I tryed taking the drive out of the enclosure and used a sata / usb adapter with the same results. I'm running windows 10. Their is a life time of pictures on this drive. What do u think I should do?
