Internet Says It's Connected, but Chrome, FireFox, Skype all Stop Working

Basically, what it says in the title. It started about a month, maybe a month and a half ago, I believe. Our previous modem had literally died, so we needed to get a new one. Once it arrived, I believe that was when the problem started. Since I believed it was an issue with a slow internet plan, we switched providers - which required another new modem, only this one had to have a separate router as well. Unfortunately, the problem continued even with all of this.

I've tried so many things that I cannot remember them all, but everything thus far has failed - including resetting my PC to reinstall Windows (10). Nothing has worked. All I know is that my computer (an Acer laptop) displays that the internet is connected, but my browsers and Skype will randomly stop working. To temporarily fix this, I simply disconnect from the internet, then reconnect. or turn the Wi-Fi off then on again (both through the computer, not the router directly) - but it continues to happen. It even happens when my screen turns off / computer falls asleep. And as far as I know, it is only this specific computer.

Any suggestions on how to solve this issue would be welcome.

A note: Pinging 8.8.8.8 and my router both give me normal results, but pinging 74.125.229.250 gives the message "Request timed out," along with these results - Packets sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss).

Update: In an effort to narrow down possibilities, I uninstalled Skype - it seemed to crash altogether sometimes when the problem occurred. However, the problem occurred again right after uninstallation was completed.

Update 2: I've switched the channel on my Wifi and my computer itself to 6 for both, instead of 1. Perhaps this will solve the issue.

Solution
After experimenting with an external antenna, I have learned that my problem is apparently something to do with my laptop's internal antenna. It has not had a problem since the external antenna has been plugged in. Therefore, I'm going to mark this problem as Solved. Thank you to those who offered their assistance - it was much appreciated.
Try checking the channel setting on your router. Go into the routers "configuration" and then go to the "Wireless" option. In here look for an option which deals with "Channels".

If the router is set to "auto", you should usually see which channel your router is using.

Next you need to check the channel setting for your Laptop:

1. Go to "Control Planel" and then "Network and Sharing Center".
2. Click on "Change Adapter Settings".
3. Now right-click "WLAN device" and and then click "Properties".
4. Go to the "Networking" tab and click on "Configure".
5. Next click on the "Advanced" tab, go to "WZC IBSS Channel Number property" and look at the value/number it is using.
6. If this value/number is different than the one that your router is using, this can cause your laptop to not connect correctly.

You can look into switching to manual selection of channel on the router and then select an appropriate channel which is supported by both your router and your laptop.

Thank you, this is a solution I hadn't encountered while searching. My router was on Auto, and using an app, I determined that it was on Channel 9. My laptop, however, was on 11. I switched them both to one, and I'll get back to you to let you know if this solves my issue for good.

It originally looked as though it was working, but it just happened again. Thank you, though, for your suggestion. Do you - or anyone else - have more suggestions?
