Tons of problems from RAM

So, first of all, I swapped out one of my 2 old 2gb sticks for a 4gb one, so I total at 6gb. I noticed that it was being detected but wasn't being used. Miraculously, one time it did and it completely slowed my fps to below 20 in a game.

I capped my RAM to 4096 and it was working fine for about a month, then today happened. Playing a game as normal, but then I got disproportionately huge drops in frames. I realized my usage was at around 5.11 GB in task manager. I went back to try to cap it again to see that not only was it completely uncapped, but when I tried to recap it, there now reads out to be a total of 3568 MB, or exactly 3.48 usable GB. Whenever I try to recap it, I only get the same result. OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

TL;DR: my computer's screwed

Can anyone help me out here?

1| If you don't know what you're doing, it's best you don't do it at all.
2| Have you made sure your BIOS is up t date?
3| It's bad practice to mix and match rams to get a theoretical cumulative ram capacity.
4| Speaking of hardware, you forgot to mention your full system's specs in spite of posting a thread of troubleshooting nature. Please include the specs for your old and new rams.
5| Does reverting to your old set of rams bring the same issue up?
