Hello, as the title says. I have burn marks on my motherboard I am really asking two questions. First of all can I repair it? And second of all what caused it?

Specs: i5 3570k
GTX Strix 970
AX750 PSU Corsair
p8h61-mx usb 3.0 Motherboard.

So start of the story goes. First of all I woke up after a thunderstorm the night before (No jokes there was a thunderstorm) and I had accidently left my plug on. I hear a creaking sound and smell some burning. I just assume that it is something outside, but when I look one of my case fans was lit up and slowly turn even though the computer was off.

So I started the computer (it was hesitant to say the least) but it booted into windows normally. Then I find I can't use my mouse, keyboard and pretty much all of the connectors at the back such as Ethernet wasn't working. So I turned it off, then switched it back on after switching somethings around (ports on the back) and it seems only my mouse is work, but not my keyboard (Which is a wireless cheap thing).

After this I decided to turn it off and then take out the CMOS battery and run with out it. It came up with no keyboard connected and everything else like mouse and what not, and it didn't start into windows this time. Problem is I can't get into the BOIS because it doesn't recognise my keyboard. I switch to a PS/2 Keyboard (Round connector) and plugged that in, looks like power as it lights up but stills says no Keyboard press F1 for recovery.

So opened it up and found some scorch marks which I took pictures.

So can I repair it and any ideas on what caused it?

5 years is a pretty good life for a motherboard. Time to let it run wild in the great cloud on the net.

Power surge could have fried it certainly. Though regular cleaning could have helped. Given the color I would say a smoker? That tar and residue gets on everything and becomes a dust magnet. The organic compounds plus a little humidity and you can actually create alternate paths for electricity to flow. Most of it would still go through the components and traces since it has a lower resistance, but then tossing lightning into the mix and the surge would over load everything. Enough current flowing in any give place, and pop.

Repairs would only be possible if it is only mounted component damage. Being able to identify and replace the...

Repairs would only be possible if it is only mounted component damage. Being able to identify and replace the parts is quite difficult without a schematic or working example to reverse engineer. Since it is a multilayer board, any shorts in there are basically non repairable.

Thanks for the reply. You were right about the smoker, however it is the person who lives with me :D I never smoke and never will, and I will be honest the place I am in is like a dust magnet. Well damn. I am now at a impasse, I will ether get a z77 Mobo and use everything else, or get a new mobo and upgrade my processor. Thanks anyway all of you.

I will pick all as the solution but I can't. So I am gonna go on quantity alone.

Many thanks again.
