hi there

I am really into Dayz... Ive been watching people play this game for about 4 years or so all the way back to the mod and I am finally at the point of getting a computer capable of running it and playing the game, but i really know nothing about what to get or building a pc... there seems to be some conflict online as the minimum requirements to run DayZ...

I dont really want to have to build. its not that i couldnt, I would just prefer to purchase something at a nice price under 5 hundred bucks that i would be able to plug in and just start playing on. I am also planning on doing content creation on youtube, running sony vegas... etc... and maybe streaming eventually.

I already have a monitor and keyboard, along with a cheap computer. in addition, would it be possible to harvest things from the cheap computer like its hard drive (1TB) and its dvd/cd player to cut down on a build cost? its a refurbed dell optiplex....

thanks in advance.

hi. thank you so much for answering.... the current computer I just got about a month ago. Its a refurbished Dell optiplex. 740.. 745 i think. it was completely wiped and refurbed so everything is new. it also came with keyboard, mouse and monitor.

alternately, could i use the tower and other guts from it in addition to purchasing the new components to supplement and make the build cheaper? I cant tell whats good and whats not but I know that an Nvidia card is reccomended at the least. otherwise, what would be good for decent game play, video editing, and maybe eventual streaming at a price that doesnt kill my budget?

i am wanting to stay under 500 dollars

That is not a very good system, waste of money really for modern gaming. You can get a used business tower with a Core i3 or i5 system for about $150-200 and stick a GTX 750 Ti for a $300 total cost low spec gaming system.

That GTX 745 is useless for newer games, it's just a basic use system, web browsing, documents, 10 year old games or something like LOL or CS GO on lower settings.

Should have asked about the computer before you bought it not after, you pretty much wasted whatever you spent on it if you want to game on it. Sell it and take a look at this build for part http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3127666/build-500.html#18421965 Note this does not include the OS which is about $100 for Windows 10, or monitor/keyboard/mouse.

The Dell 745 you can probably sell for $50 for on craigslist, maybe $75 with the 1 GB drive.

If you want a pre-built, this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883282534 and a GTX 750 Ti would serve as a decent lower end gaming system. There are probably some lower end gaming systems you can get from ABS, Cyberpower, etc... but they are not really worth the prices, low quality components in most of them.

no no... i didnt buy the optiplex to game. just to do basic work at home like writing, audio editing and browsing. apologies for the confusion.

What i am asking is:

could i do a low cost build for a gaming machine to run a game like dayz that would be under 500 bucks...
and
if i can just harvest its components to add to a new build for a gaming machine to make the build cheaper... and what would i need to do so?

Yes, it's possible, look at the links I posted. Pre-builts are a bit crappy quality at $500 so either get the parts for a good system, or get a used business system with an OS license and 300+ watt power supply and add in a 750 Ti card. Or spend $500 or so on an FX-6300 pre-built gaming system from a lower tier maker like ABS, but those power supplies they use in the cheap systems are horrible. I suggest the $500 home built system I linked.
