I have flipped through multiple forums, but can't find the answer I'm looking for (kind of new to the whole building a PC thing and upgrading my gaming rig).

I'm getting more memory for my PC and I want to know the best course of action.
Currently have 8gb (2x4gb) 1333mhz in my computer. Buying 16gb (2x8gb) 1600mhz.

What should I do and/or set them up?
Use all four? Replace the two existing? If using all four, does it matter on order? (8gb on channel 1 and 16gb on channel 2 or vice versa)

Solution
If you try and mix and bear in mind there are no guarantees they will even play together start at the CPU and install 8-4-8-4....that puts 12GB in each channel and if they play nice - all will run in dual channel mode

Ok, first of all, mixing frequencies works but is not recommended. So you should either get 1333MHz RAM (not much point IMO) or get rid of the older RAM. Unless you do some heavy editing or something that uses a lot of RAM, 16GB should be more than enough for most people.

RAM should be put in the same amounts on the same slots, meaning that if you have two 4GB sticks and two 8GB sticks, put both of the 4GB sticks in the same colored slot or letter (lets say A). So you would have two 4GB sticks in the A slots and two 8GB sticks in the B slots. In some motherboards it doesn't matter whatever order you put them in, but others won't boot.

Dual or quad channel is something useless for anyone who is NOT using a server as the difference is usually less than 2% in performance, and most of the time there's no difference at all.

And last, I said I'd keep only the new memory because using both of them at the same time will work, but the 1600MHz memory will be underclocked at 1333MHz. There's not much difference here either, but RAM performs better on the frequency it was meant to be used. Under some circumstances and if the motherboard is doesn't properly underclock the faster RAM, you could get BSOD's.
