Should I be worried about clicking from new HDD?

I just bought a new 5TB HGST hard drive when it was on sale the other day, I installed it into my PC and noticed a ticking\clicking sound coming from it. It still seems to run totally okay and passed the SMART hard drive test but I'm worried the noises mean it's already starting to fail. It doesn't sound like a scrapping or something like that, more of a just the moving parts. But I've never had a hard drive do this right off the bat. If it was a smaller drive or less expensive I might risk it but with this one I want to make sure. Is it just normal hard drive noises most likely and it's totally fine or should I try and get a new one?

Hey there, @Kryne!

It's not normal for a hard drive to sound like that. However, it's possible that the noises could be caused from extra vibrations from improper mounting of the HDD, so I'd strongly recommend you check your connections to the drive and make sure it's seated properly. Another thing you could try is checking if the noises are still present if you plug the HDD to another computer.
In case the issue is still present there as well, you should definitely RMA the HDD through the manufacturer's or the reseller's customer support and get a replacement from them.

However, keep in mind that high-performance drives could be slightly noisier than other regular desktop HDDs.

Either way, contact the reseller's/manufacturer's...

Personally, the largest I am staying with at present is 3TB - I've heard news that some of the 5, 6 and 8TB drives have had bad failure rates. I've never had any of my hard drives emit a click sound - my oldest HDD is a 160GB WD that is coming up to 11 years old and still scores 100% in HD Sentinel.

If you're really worried, take it to a PC repair shop and ask them for advice - if you're still worried, return it for a replacement.
