Hello guys,

I am having an issue here, and I would really appreciate your help !
Earlier today, I cleaned my old laptop's fan (Toshiba Satellite P300) and change the thermal paste as it was getting hot and noisy.
To do so I had to dissemble the whole laptop (impossible to access the fan otherwise : crappy design...). Anyway, it was not my first time disambling this laptop and I cleaned it.

After the cleaning, I tried starting up the computer and here is what I noticed on start-up:
- when using battery only (no power supply), it starts fine
- when using power supply only : the power supply led turns off and the pc shuts down immediatly
- when using power supply and battery : the power supply led turns off immediatly as if there were no power supply unit
But, when the computer is off, the led indicating that there is a power supply unit is on !

So, I have to let the battery charge while the computer is off and then use pc on batery only (then it works fine until the battery is empty).

Here are a few questions to help me understand what is happening :
- could this issue be related to the cleaning operation I just made ?
- I hear 2 short bips on startup, what does it mean ?
- it looks like everything is working fine when the battery is full (fans, ram, ...). Still, can the problem come from the motherboard or is it only power supply unit issue ?

Thank you very much for your help !

" I hear 2 short bips on startup, what does it mean ?" these are 'beep code' and are usually documented in your laptop's troubleshooting section. If you can't find them there, go into the bios and see who made your bios (ami, award, phoenix, etc.) then google 'beep code' and the name of your bios maker.

Sure sounds like you got a cable loose when you cleaned out your laptop. Open it again and reseat all those ribbon cables.

Ok ! Thanks for the suggestion, I will try this this week-end :) I hope it is only a small cable issue !

Unfortunately, after resetting all cables the problem is still the same... As soon as I start the laptop, it stops using the power supply to use the battery only. It switches back to the power supply as soon as I shutdown the laptop.

I think the wiring is fine as the power supply works correctly when the laptop is off, and the laptop works correctly when using battery.

I wonder if changing the power supply is worth it or if the problem comes from another component.

After re-building entirely my laptop 2 or 3 times, I had the idea to start it with no RAM, no harddrive, no keyboard, no battery, all the wires unplugged... and it worked !
As it worked I started plugging a cable, start, check if it worked and start again. It allowed me to find a cable with poor contact. After moving it a bit, my laptop started normally :)

Thank you very much tsnor for your help !

Excellent. Good job finding it.
