I currently have a board specifically made for running cards in crossfire (Gigabyte Z97-HD3) . Would I be able to run a 1080 with the same performance on that board? Also, will a i5 4690k at 5 ghz be a good enough cpu for the card?
Same performance as what?
Since the GTX 1080 is faster than the fastest dual-GPU card AMD has to offer,
i'd expect some CPU bottleneck with anything short of an i7. But what resolution your monitor is and what the vertical refresh rate is will matter.
Your a Grandmaster and you stated please see bold. This is 100% beyond false. Any newer i5 4690k included will not bottleneck a 1080...........
As I stated, it will depend on the screen resolution and v. refresh rate of his gaming display. At 1080p/60hz, no. But at 4K/144hz for example, I still say the i5 will be the bottleneck. Maybe not a lot, and maybe not in every game, but some. Most dual-GPU setups will be using i7s. The 1080 is faster than many modern dual-GPU cards.
Here is one such example, and it is with only the GTX 1070:

The GPU can't get close to 100% usage while the CPU is maxed out at near 100%.
Will it still play outstandingly good? Yes, of course. But it does present a bottleneck to the GPU.
I believe the test was run with a 144Hz 1080p or 1440p monitor. I can't remember which right now.
