So My current build is

http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Hugzie/saved/RbvK8d

It has a i5-3470

I will be doing upgrades to get ready for VR. First and foremost I will get a GTX 1070
I also already doubled my ram recently

My question however is, how well would my current mobo and CPU handle VR? Would it more worth my while to save up and upgrade now?

Thank you in advance!

I know this is months old but still a relevant question. The most important factor in anything "gaming" related is your GPU, the 1070 being roughly twice as powerful as the minimum spec for VR. There are CPU intensive games but pretty much any i5 from any generation other than the first, will work great.

Historically you will find that game requirements usually reference processors from the most recent couple generations relevant to the release date. That does not automatically exclude previous generations, it is all about how they stack up against each other. For example, the i5-4590 is recommended for VR, well the 3470 performs within 5% of that 2 generation newer processor. It performs within 3% of the i5-6400 which is 3 generations newer. The game publisher simply doesn't want to list every single possible component that is capable of running their title.

Instead of asking other people, most of whom will provide you with opinions instead of hard facts, just check out benchmarks. The numbers will give you the information you need. Example, if something suggest that you need an i5-6400 then Google i5-6400 vs whatever you have at the time. If your processor performs no more than 10% worse than the recommended, you are likely good to go.
