Hello folks,

I came to idea of building my own computer last month and I've been reading a lot.

Yesterday my colleage saw me searching for GPU and asked me if I'd like to have his old sapphire hd 7770 so that I could invest more on CPU.
This way I'd be able to upgrade my GPU in future not being concerned by bottlenecking issues.

I received the GPU today and I was wondering if I should get another GPU (Asus hd 7770) for 50 bucks to crossfire.

Normally I'd have to invest at least 200 bucks for GPU but now I can get 2 hd7770s for 50 dollars in sum.

Would that be logical?

I'm thinking of i5-4460 3.2 GHz quad core LGA1150 cpu (there is a %20 discount for it).

Is that a good choise?

One more question, which motherboard should I get to make these all components work together?

Sorry for bothering with too many questions. I'm a total computer virgin and please keep in mind that I'm trying to build a gaming computer in really really tight budget.

Thank you all in advance for replies!

Solution
I personally wouldnt pay $50 for a pair of 7770s.

The 4460 is a decent enough cpu though, you would need to make sure the motherboard would be crossfire capable, which many are.

Do you have a better recommendation then? Because so far as I understan, if I get a decent GPU like gtx780ti, I'll have money left to go for either Pentium g3852 3.2 Ghz or, if I really push hard I can get an i3-6100 3.7 Ghz.

Which means that upgrade is not an option in the future.

I was thinking since I got the hd7770 for free, I could add one more to at least get around %30 more performance. Which would satisfy my expectations I imagine.

Thanks for advice. I think I am going that way.

@RobCrezz, I would not invest one third of my salary on a gtx970. I can risk 50 dollars though. Once I'm not able to keep it over 40fps then It's time for converting to gtx..

Thanks a lot for replies fellas. I appreciate it!

Third of your salary? They are going for $150-200 on the used market.

Obviously its up to you, but I would advise against crossfire 7770s, remember the vram doesnt double with crossfire.

Yeah there are not many people here willing to sell their beloved gtx series gpu. There are a few but it doesn't worth it because the price is very close to a new one.
I make around $1000 monthly so yeah it's almost one third of my monthly fortune :ange:

Oh sorry.. Just to not confuse people about the prices. But apparently it didn't go too well :D

I'm living in Poland.

I will fill my profile details once I get the chance. It seems like I'll spend some more time around here.

I'm with RobCrezz with you just using the 7770 on your own, then swapping to a RX 460 which is $100 in the US if you need a cheaper card. Spending $50 on a second 7770 which is quite a few years old by now is basically wasting $50. An RX 460 should out-perform dual 7770 and use a lot less power. Or the GTX 950 which is about $120-130 now (with rebates in most cases), or the RX 470 at $200.

I'd spend $100 on an RX 460 or GTX 950, or wait a month and get an RX 470 over dual 7770 easily.

I got myself second hd 7770. As I said on the post I'm not a rich man. In fact I'm in really tight budget.
I'm trying to get most out of every penny.

Just when I was about to buy an i3-6100, I saw a discount on i5 4460.
It was cheaper than i3 6100 ($130 brand new).
I know i3 6100 has skylane and performs a bit better but I would have to pay more for mobo so it seemed logical. plus I get quad cores.

Now it comes to choose a mother board. I have no idea what to choose though.

Any advice is appreciated!

As price is a factor, I would get the cheapest used motherboard you can find with one of the following chipsets : H81, B85, H87, H97, Z87, Z97.

However, because you now want to run crossfire, that limits your options to more expensive motherboards as you require crossfire support. Some H87 and H97 can support crossfire, most Z87 and Z97 will do.

In addition to the fancier motherboards you need for crossfire, you also need a good power supply with an extra 80 watts to run the second 7770 card. So you are spending the $50 you were looking to save on the parts to run the slower cards and use more power while using the system, by having an extra two light bulbs on all the time basically for the extra power use.

There are quite a few games that don't see performance benefit or even run worse on dual cards. And you are limited by the 1 GB memory amount, games like GTA V like good amount of RAM on the card for textures to run smoothly.

If you can return the second 7770 you should, then get another $50 in a month or whenever and get a RX 460 or GTX 950, faster than dual 7770 cards, use less power, better support, new card warranty.
