I will start off with my setup before I begin my rant:

Asus Rampage IV Extreme
Intel i7 4960X Extreme (OC to 4.4GHz)
64GB Corsair Vengeance RAM (8x8GB)
(2) MSI GTX 980 Graphics Cards (SLI Plus Over Clocked)
(2) Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD's (Raid 0)
Coorsair AX1200i PSU

Okay, here we go...... So I am starting to second guess myself with what I have chose for my rig build. It has taken me 8 years, thousands of dollars, and countless man-hours to get to where I am today. I use to have a basic, just to get by, PC until I started building my own. So I know what it is like to appreciate what I have now.

Anyways, I have tested this out with a few modern games that are designed to be ran in a higher resolution. First example, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I always start off my new games on my Samsung 55" 4K TV through a 25GB/s HDMI cable to truly benchmark my rig. I start out with "Ultra" settings with the resolution on 3840x2160 (4K). Of course I expect it to be a little laggy, but not what I am experiencing. It drops to 14FPS flat-line.

Now I do understand that is a tall order for any PC, but what is concerning me more is that I will drop the settings down to "High", which is 2 settings below "Ultra" along with the resolution down to 1920x1080 and receive almost the same FPS (24)!!!!??????

My cards are setup in SLI mode, with confirmation from GPUz. I have tried Overclocking my cards with the MSI App and still the same results!?

My questions are these:
1. Should I get one more MSI GTX 980 to assist the other two?
2. If so, will I need to upgrade my PSU from 1200W to 1500W?
3. Will the extra GPU even make a freakin' difference or have I started a lost cause?

Solution
Not every game will scale very well for SLI - especially at 4K.

I would suggest running with a single card initially and see how it looks. Then run in SLI. Pretty regularly you'll see minimal improvements from SLI and, in some extreme cases, it'll actual impact performance pretty dramatically.

3-Way SLI is highly unlikely to gain you anything of note (vs the cost anyway).
