Is there 32bit drivers available for the laptop from Toshiba's site? If not, you may have to install x64 to obtain driver support.

Drivers should be available via Toshiba's site (but I would need model # to know for sure) - you'd likely have to download on another computer & then transfer via an external HDD or thumb drive onto the laptop.

It is 645D-S4040 Satellite, Model psk0qu-01800e, serial# ya168927w Came with w7 home prem 64bit. Had virus. I overwote the toshiba and lost the given oe op sys. (oops).( Did so to trap out virus etc). I think this stuff is too kinky for my 70 yr old mind. I thought that this gifted older lap to me from my kids might be a fun thing to challenge. I think all would be best served if i solved quadratic equations on paper instead of meddeling w op sys. Hmm, -b+/-rootbsq-4ac
I could reinstall and select home 64bit. That is what was originally. I just do not want to slow things w unnecessary complexity.
Nonetheless perhaps the 64 does not slow things. Yes, the selection from toshiba matches 64 drivers. maybe the two (32 vs 64 are not so interchangable, and therefore I should not wandered away from the pre established designs.
You might suggest i go for the 64 and say that that is actually better, especially since toshiba thought so when they designed it. I think my meddeling is no help, eh? Hey, many thanks for your input/suggestions.

Drivers certainly exist...... http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=2759798

But that appears to be a ridiculous process - everything is via a 'utility' opposed to a driver itself.

x86 (32 bit) and x64 are not always interchangeable. Usually drivers have x86 and x64 versions, sometimes that doesn't always ring true.

That being said, follow the link. On the lefthand side you'll see "Windows 7 (32bit)" and drivers/utilities on the righthand side. download them all, and transfer to your laptop. then run/install each of them.

That should straighten it all out for you.

Out of curiosity, your laptop doesn't have >4GB RAM, does it? If so, you'll want x64 in order to actually use it (x86 limits to 4GB........and if by chance you installed "Windows 7 'Starter'", I think that's even limited to utilizing only 2GB.

Okay, getting close to a solution. My machine came with 4ram ,and still has 4 ram. Came with 64 bit home premium when purchaed new. A couple months ago i bought a w7 disk on craigs that actually works on several loads ive done. It even gives a key # when finished loading. In two cases of computers i went on to get the free w 10 sucessfully
I have this installation disc that will let me install choices of w7 starter, basic, home premium, pro.
I had chosen the 86 basic . Next the new plan: I am going to overwrite and choose the 64bit home premium (I get a choice)
I figure then i will closely match what the "machine was designed for, inasmuch as the driver choice will be definatively given. then I can transfer some choice drivers with a good level of confidence rather than hacking an installation.
I figure that a beginner like me is better off using an existing trail rather than chopping thru bushes.
From what i learn from you is that if the processor can take the 64bit and i have 4ram, then go for it. plus itll be easy to select the right drivers. Sound right?
