Hi,

As the title suggest I am looking to setup a NAS with PLEX and possibly gaming (via VM running win 8 or 10 etc.) on the machine.

At present I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with 2.5 GB RAM running FreeNAS with a 3 TB hard drive (no RAID or anything) for NAS purposes. I tried installing PLEX on it but found out that the plugin isn't supported anymore on FreeNAS 32 bit. At the same time, for a while now, I have been contemplating building a PC to play SC2 (and occasionally SC1) on. That is the only game I would be playing, if possible, on this new machine.

Instead of building two machines, I would like to just build one and use it for the 3 purposes outlined.

I looked at ASRock Intel Avoton C2750 2.4GHz processor for NAS + PLEX however not sure where this leaves me for SC2 via a VM. And I am not sure if it is strong enough for streaming between 4 devices simultaneously (my PLEX is shared between 4 households (my siblings)).

Ideally I would like to keep my cost under 1000.

I don't need a OS, or keyboard; have those already. Currently I have a late 2015 iMac that I play SC2 on as time permits. But that is mainly for my kids so I don't like using it.

Any suggestive builds are appreciated. From what I have read for NAS, ECC RAM is recommended but that is only on Xeon processors but they aren't really ideal for gaming. I am not that concerned as long as the Xeon, coupled with a Graphics card, can play SC2 in max settings. Or if ECC isn't that big of deal for the NAS, I am okay with an i7 as well.

Approximate Purchase Date: As soon as possible

Budget: <= 700 (if NAS + PLEX only, i understand HDD costs so don't factor that in. Just the bare bone system itself; if NAS + PLEX + SC2 <= 1000)

System Usage from Most to Least Important: NAS and PLEX are both equally important + occasional SC2.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: new build from scratch (not sure what I can re-use from Dimension 4700)

Do you need to buy OS: No

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Fine with any; typically I buy from NewEgg, B&H, Amazon

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Vienna, VA, USA - I have a micro-center store close by to get parts in person.

Parts Preferences: Always been an Intel guy so that is my favored processor.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: I don't think i need either for SC2 as a single GPU will do.

I read this build: http://dreamvent.blogspot.com/2016/01/diy-nas-plex-server-build.html and looks good to me and also build from http://blog.brianmoses.net/2016/02/diy-nas-2016-edition.html appears nice as well minus the expensive case and SSD.

Please advise. Thanks!

I did checkout this thread: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3180713/xeon-gaming-screen-capturing-plex-server.html which answers the gaming + PLEX part, however I am not sure if it answers the NAS part and would appreciate any help on that.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($324.99 @ SuperBiiz)
CPU Cooler: Deepcool GAMMAXX 300 55.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($24.99 @ NewEgg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($99 @ OutletPC)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($69.88 @ OutletPC)

I also need help with a PSU and will my existing GPU, HD 4670 1 GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102855, suffice for SC2?

Lastly, how do I fit NAS into this build as that is critical for me.

A case suggestion would be welcomed as well; something that has at least a few swappable hard drives.

Thanks!

Any advise or input is appreciated. If you feel I am going about this wrong i.e. trying to fit three utilities: NAS, PLEX, and Gaming on one rig please let me know. I am willing to change direction or curtail my ambitions as necessary :)

I'm honestly not well versed in how to setup a NAS. If you want I think a couple of the mods here have NAS builds and I can let them know about this thread. I would think it could be done if you got the proper hard drives for it, and setup your system to dual boot Windows and a proper Linux distro like FreeNas.

As far as cases with hot swap hard drives go I honestly don't know if what you are looking for exists anymore. I know there used to be cases with hot swap hard drives, but I think that might be a thing of the past. If worse comes to worse you can always buy an external HD dock like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1DS3CG5700

The builds you are looking at are geared more toward serves and less toward gaming. I doubt that server power supplies can handle the wattage output required to run a gaming GPU like the 1070 or 1080. That Xeon build that I put in the Best Configs contest can definitely handle a modern GPU but I don't know about hot swap HDs.

Thanks g-unit1111. Getting feedback from some other mods would be awesome.

I can ultimately tweak my setup to run VMs on top of a hypervisor i.e. one VM for FreeNAS with PLEX, and one VM with Windows for Gaming. As long as the Xeon coupled with the graphics card from your suggestive build can handle SC2 in the highest possible settings (or a cheaper card), I am happy.

In terms of NAS, I do know the disk requirements. I checked out the motherboard from your build and it has 6 SATA ports which would be fine (4 storage + 2 for parity). I could use a SSD to store the hypervisor software & VM images and storage would be attached from NAS to the windows VM.

Here is link to G-Unit1111's build that I am referencing: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/7ctP3F

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1245 V5 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($312.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X150-PLUS WS ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($102.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($91.81 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 8GB FTW Gaming ACX 3.0 Video Card ($464.98 @ Newegg)
Case: NZXT S340 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($83.98 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: SeaSonic S12G 550W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($83.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $1240.70

If the graphics card is overdoing it for SC2 in highest settings I am fine with a cheaper option that can handle SC2 in max. 4k would be nice but not required as i don't have a monitor yet.

Thanks!
