So I want to create a server on gmod, minecraft mabey, and mabey 1 or 2 other games like it to play with my friends, so a private server, but to do that I need to port forward my router and to do that, i have to ask my mother (because I am only 14 I have to ask my mom because she put a password on the router) who doesn't want me to port forword because she says it is way to dangerous and we will get hacked. Is it or is it not dangerous considering I am ONLY playing with my friends. (BTW I live in a neighborhood so not a place where 100 people walk by every minute and some hacking people for free wifi)

Contrary to what your mother thinks Craze.

Port forwarding exists on routers for the exact opposite.

It is in fact a secure feature where only a set computer with a IP address given by the router will have the set port ranges required for the game server you set up will be used for communication between the server and the wide area network, the internet.

Any other machine cannot be effected since the port is only set or opened for the one machine running on the router you have, or your home network the router creates network.

As long as you setup the port forwarding of your router up correctly, and the Hardware firewall of the router.
And also any software firewall running on the server you will be fine.

Unless you mum has a great understanding of how routers and networking work.

It`s more of a case of scaremongering.

Thank you for your response Shaun o I really appreciate your help. The truth is I didn't know about everything that you said and now that I know I will be able to play with my friends. Thank you for your help again, I cannot thank you enough for your help :D
